Off Topic..Whats 1 of the first things you look at when you have an obvious spark problem in a motor ???? Got an Exa turbo e15et motor. The car drives beautifully for 20 mins then cuts out. 15 mins later start and drives another 20 mins and cuts out. So I take it to a reputable mechanic... So he throws it on computer... He tell's me the turbo's stuffed and sucking air ($350 replaced). It's the computer ($150 replaced). The coil leads and plugs ($140) No it's some sensor, plug, wire, module on Efi.. Bla bla bla for 3 weeks.... So I get onto the Exa forum and explain my prob.... 49,000 responses all say Dizzy, common trait... So I go to mechanic's and ask him to take off the dizzy cap... It disintegrates in his hand as he pull's it out and it's totally melted inside and some how arc'd it self, seized bearings, rust from the hole underneath (bottom half of dizzy cap you dont see)..... So I take it to a dizzy shop ( $235 bathed, new bearings, crank sensor etc) 45mins later got it back (Reco'd/Done)... Now this mechanic guy want $800 for labor and told me he checked the dizzy.... So am I over reacting and suck it up and pay him or what ??????????

Yea just go pick your car up dude tell him to get F U C K E D!! Take your business and money elsewhere.. By rights he can remove 1 bolt and legally hold your car for as long as he wants as its not finished but yea very very rare that that will happen. Just go in there in announced and take the car

What a $hit mechanic. I hate it when this happens and I have a mate who have gone threw 9k on his ute to date and still have crook lifters that he has been charged for a full set brand new!!!
Anyone who uses a spanner and socket set can do the process of illumination but that's what is trying to be ovoided by going to a mech.
I have been in this situation and paid reluctantly but still wish I never did.
Sorry to hear about a situation like this and good luck!

Personally I'd sit down with him and pay half or nothing. It can be a case of elimination with older cars. Yes a forum will give you a common problem as the answer a lot of times. Mechanics work on hundreds of different cars and don't know all models traits off by heart.

I say yes he didn't investigate fully but a stuffed dizzy may make the diagnostic computer read wrong codes on done things from what I've seen. Pay at least for parts not labour as you have new parts in there now at least imho.

No IM definitely no mechanic by trade

Catch 22, but most people would have thought (he) mechanics would have started there with those symptoms

No, this is stupidity, not a blatant rip as such !! I think I will be civil and just tell him $400 and bite the bullet... thx guy's. PS I supplied all parts and did the running around

im a mechanic, and run my own mobile business, and unfortunately sometimes problems are hard to find. what you described as your problem as i was reading i automaticly thought ignition module/dizzy, but as a general rule, i always start with the basics, and maybe your mechanic needs a reminder of that. i would have checked cap, rotor, leads, plugs, loose or damaged components visually etc before doing most other things. i have been in the same situation with customers where u cant diagnose a prob straight up, and sometimes you have to go with your gut, but me personally, cause i appreciate my customers work, i would have prob charged parts no labour, but it really depends on the situation hey. maybe choose a different mechanic in the future, and tell him your not really happy with the process. feedback is always welcomed by me, cause a happy customer, is a good customer (who will come back, and recommend friends)

A bad dizzy does cause issues its the first thing he should have checked, since you supplied all the parts! well I reckon you should just pay for a dizzy cap change over $10 at most and bill him for the rest of the time they stuffed you around if they play hard ball.
