I'm using
* factory B310 D4K type on the A12
* factory B122 type on the A14

Both are high-energy electronic ignition. I have little interest in Pertronix, which is good and easy to install, but has no performance increase. It will eliminate the points which is the advantage over stock.

is this the same as the stock resistor?
http://compare.ebay.com.au/like/22089 ... yp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes

Hi DD if I bought this http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,1208821,parttype,7108
would I still need to run the ballast resistor and coil? i.e. could I keep them in place and not change them over or would i need a new coil to suit?

the weights and curves are right for a stock a12 aren't they?

Cheers,
Tom

Resistors are not maintenance parts -- they last for a lifetime. Measure the resistor you have now, if it is in spec, no need to replace it.

I've never seen one go bad, but other guys have had their
s burn out. It is obvious when that happens.

This is the Datsun B310 electronic distributor RockAuto.com $163 USD + shipping

It needs in addition to that unit:
* Cap & Rotor
* You can use it with the stock coil & resistor (for low-energy output)
* Or use an early Pulsar/Bluebird coil without a resistor (for high-energy)

The weights and curves from a stock A12 distributor are not right for performance. You should calibrate every distributor if you want maximum performance. Otherwise, yes it will run as-is no problems. Set the static initial timing to 5 degrees BTDC for USA distributors, as they have MORE advance than AUS distributors (which are set to 7 degrees initial). Likely you could go up to 7 or 9 degrees, but it depends on the tolerance of the individual distributor and your specific engine. In other words, don't let it ping.

Thanks so much for the reply!
Quite annoying they want $31 for each part I add to my cart as I'm in Australia so for the dizzy it's $31 extra for shipping.. i add cap and rotor and it's $61 shipping! haha

Sorry one last question just wondering if you had the bosch part number for the coil? and then id remove the ballast?

Well that's why the Pertronix is so popular, it is the least expensive brand new option. And you can buy it in Australia.

but the 310 is a direct swap using a stock setup and then could eventually replace the coil.. would it be more reliable? but I'd love to know what new coil part number I'd need to buy for the 310 swap if possible?

Pertronix is very reliable.

310? Do you mean B310? Because Datsun 310 is something else. Read about the B310 electronic ignition parts here, including Cap part number: B310 Electronic Distributor Swap

Condensor is not required with electronic ignition (although one for radio frequency suppression may be used).

The condensor part number for early 1200 is here: Distributor
