I got a 120 Y with an A14 engine and I am planning to install a weber 32-36 and a set of headers I have around,to use it around town as a street -transport car with some mods.It has a automatic gearbox and later on I will find another engine for a transplant. As of now I just want to enjoy , and my question is , will a A14 engine with headers and a weber carb. and posibly a cam. work fine with the automatic gearbox or not. I know a 5 speed is the way to go but as of now , untill I know what engine to transplant (and save all that money) I want to drive a fast street car ,do not want to wait untill the new engine happens.

KEEP THE AUTO. I wish I still had an auto Datto, When I first got mine it had an A14 and auto, it was heaps of fun to drive. It's easier to go to Mcdonalds drive-through and then go and eat while you are driving if you have an Auto. No more spilt drink during gear changes...or french fries flying across the car as you drift sideways through a corner and need to shift back to second to correct the oversteer....ok maybe I shouldn't drive this hard while eating...but sometimes it 'just happens'. I've heard that the 1200 Autos are very tough and capable of handling lots of power. I don't expect carb or cam changes will affect the auto too much, so long as you jet the idle speed correctly so that isn't a pain to keep running on cold mornings. This will depend on the carby having a cold-start choke circuit, I know that some Weber DCOEs have a choke circuit, but many don't. I think the DCF Downdrafts have a choke circuit. Chris.

The 1200 auto is a really stout little transmission, really heavy duty, and actually shifts pretty strong, however it's no match in performance against a 5 speed or even a 4 speed manual. I have a auto tranny for a 1200 that I would like to get rid of, but it's located back in Washington state at my friend's place, if anyone really needs one let me know. -Andy

That is right, for city driving it is excelent, performance wise is another story and I understand that, so I think I will keep it and later on I will see what happens (if I can get a A15 w/5 speed trans./gearbox that I can then rebuilt for performance,). I heard that the transmission bay of an auto is larger than the manual,so in case of a transplant, there is an advantage.

The tunnel is MUCH bigger. Almost 200mm wider. Although Using the late Silvia 5 speeds, the shifter end of the box can hit on both sides, meaning a slight change to some of the tunnel, even in an auto version. Keep all the Auto bits though. You never know when you may need to go back to 'full-automatic'...Geez I don't like being at work on Sundays... Chris.
