It wasn't a dealership, it was a Jap Imperial Army supply dump from WW2. The Japs actually landed somewhere between Darwin & Broome (both air raids were diversionary tactics) and buried enough military supplies to last at least 5 years. Buried up there are Datsun military personnel carriers and trucks, zeroes, Kawasaki Motorcycles, Toyoda textile machinery, tanks and a butt load of ammo. I know it's true, cos an old hermit, who was a Luftwaffe deserter that only wore underpants and lived on the banks of the Fitzroy told me!

Interesting stuff, it does have all the ingredients for a great bar story.

The Japs have done some strange stuff, there is gear burried all over the place here. They (the japanese- moreso POW's) dug over 15 miles of cave networks here, they hid submarines, barges, landing craft, tanks, trucks, jeeps basically their entire army in these caves so when the recon planes flew over, they saw nothing - 'No jap's ere skipper!'. Anyway, apart from becoming a great thread to tell some mysteries on, I'm interested to see if anyone else pipe's up about hearing the same story about the dusty disappearance.

What was the basis for the new township? Or what sort of economy or appeal was there to warrant it's existence (or proposed existence)?
