Dash lights should still work even if the alternator is not charging. Sounds like you have two separate problems.
1974 B210, japan built or otherwise, used external voltage regulator. Like cadet said it's possible someone swapped a newer internally regulated model, and also possible that it's not wired correctly. * Look on the alternator for model number * Alternator T-connector markings of F and N * Alternator T-connector markings of L and S FN type is externally regulated, LS type in internal.
