3S-GTE engine makes 190 lb-ft in stock form in the early Celica.

The H165 differential can handle that, for example a Datsun 1200 ute diff. Or a BW68 from an aussie-assembled 120Y.

Oh, looks like the Caldina makes up to 240 lb-ft. For that you should go stronger than H165, maybe the BW78 or a Datsun H190. See Rear Axle Swaps.

Yes, the 3S-GTE is a fine engine, similar to SR20VE. I do not know much about Toyota gearboxes.

Beautifully strong engine especially the beams version but unfortunately too heavy and wide style head much like the mistu 4g63 but head from 5S-FE with porting has shown it is a superior later style head with narrow valve angle making it narrower and higher angled port design much like the late 4a-fe & 7a-fe heads on 4age blocks for more power than the GE wide angled head versions.

having said all that where are you and cant you get the ga16de engine? they can be taken to 1.8 using qg18de crankshaft or just use the qg18de with ga16de head for more compression if NA or boost it for numbers a tad short of sr20det when ported and right cams are chosen but lighter and more compact size not to mention the Nissan name which makes your coupe proud. PJZ peter is racing his 1.8ltr ga16de and says its as light as the a15, just as compact and amazing mid range.

rid the dizzie with cheap megajolt jnr like DDgonzales pics on his gallery and use the non vct head for even more compact dimensions.

Yes, it is heavy just like the SR20DET

SR20DET 250 HP weight 328 pounds
3S-GTE 240 HP

For that you get factory reliability. Or you could go with a highly stressed "built" GA16DE with same HP but without factory reliability. Obviously the GA is a better performance choice (lower weight is always better for performance).

In USA we can get 3S-GTE where for less $$ than SR20DET -- $1700 for low-mileage 3S-GTE with ECU.
