Where to start... Well My battery developed a big hole in it and spewed Acid all through the Bay. I get a new battery and clean it up, Then the car is sputtering and sounding like a 2 stroke with not enough power to get up the driveway. I take the carb out and clean like crazy, I replace the cap rotor and wires, I swear at it, I kick it. Same prob. I check the valves and they seem to be moving nicely. so then I leave it for dead and come back 3 hrs later and it runs like a top. Does anybody think the Fuel pump has anything to do with it?

Maybe you should try some different swear words?

Swear words always work for me.

Cheers

Is it possible that you have flooded the engine when trying to start it. If some of the plugs were wet with fuel, they will not fire. If you leave them long enough, they dry out & the engine runs as it should.

If you can start it, & leave it running at enough revs to smooth it out a bit, the heat from the warming of the engine should clear it fairly quickly.

Do i think that the fuel pump has something to do with it? Well the fuel pump in the carb [accelerator jet pump] squirts raw fuel into the inlet manifold, so if it is pumped too much, then it "could" be a contributing factor, along with too much choke.

when I put a kit through my carby, same problem. I had the idle solenoid hooked up to the wrong wire. Changed it over and runs like a top.

Also you said that you gave the engine bay a good clean out, maybe got water around the dizzy etc, when it dried out, problem dissapeared. ?????

Naw I pulled the plugs and they were soaked. And I am pretty sure now the Choke is toast. It needs just too much work for now.

I had a similar problem in my ute, you would be driving along fine, then it would stop, crank it for a while then it would start. this happenned for a couple of months untill I thought I should investigate. It turned out that one of the valve springs in the fuel pump was corroded and weak so that sometimes it would pump and sometimes not. Instead of buying a fuel pump or kit, I cut up a pen spring and fitted it, now and forever more all good .
Doesn't sound like this is your problem but it may help others
