Hey Guys, just out of curiosity, what's the simplest route for me to take to convert my GX coupe's rear drums to disc brakes? I've read several of the articles on brakes, and it seems each guy tries his own thing and sticks to it. So I was just wondering if there's a tried and trusted way of going about this without it being more work than its worth. My father suggested getting the front discs adapted to the rear.

Depends what cars you have in south affrica. Im guessing r31 skylines and pintaras from the 1980s arent common.

Take some pictures. A fair few guys here run r31 rear disks butni don't think they are disk over drum setups. Bluebirds here ran disk overvdrum. Need to see the backing plates how they mount to diff. Then go from there.

Former owner was one of those people that drove the car 'til everything fell off and now that the car's arse is in the air, I was consider discs as an easy alternative to finding the original parts.

On the other hand, is there another source I could consider for rear brakes? Don't the 1400 Bakkie's brakes also work?

GX Coupe uses the same rear brakes as DX sedan and every other 1200. Only for the 1990s did the brakes change.

Thanks Guys. I spoke to an engineer buddy and he said he'll think of something if I do want to go to discs someday. Maintenance fore now I guess... *sigh*

a cheap way for rear drums is to upgrade to bluebird or 910 drums from h165 or h190 just using the internals then slap on 260z finned alloy drums. The parts are easy to get for replacements and will give easier breaking as long as you dont go overboard with tightening or adjustment too high. A datsun 1000 race car had these on the rear on shortened H190 along with the front sporting smallish front discs but 4 spot calipers.

I doubt I can tighten them more than the last guy...wish I took a pic of the 2mm groove running along the inside of the drum. But the real problem was in fact not the drums as they were quite easy to find, and as I recall, more than adequate for a car this size with the right shoes. The real problem is actually the backing-plates. The one in the is bent inwards due to hard braking on finished (and over-tightened) shoes to the point where everything was jammed. Finding those backing-plates are a mission around here, so I sent them to my engineer still on the sideshafts to see what he can do with them and get me some new bearings fitted while he's at it. If all else fails, I have 2 brand new R31 drum-in-discs that never made it to my other Lady.
