Datsun Cherry 1200 Electrical Problem

Hi there,

I have a Datsun Cherry 1200 and it has a really weird problem.

I can start the engine, but it won't turn off. The only way is to put it in gear. And when the engine is on, the battery warning light keeps burning. I've checked almost everything, even replaced the battery and dynamo, but the warning light keeps burning.

After a while, i finally found what the problem is, when i unplug the Temp. Compensated electrical part (TL1Z-57F) the warning led of the battery goes out and the engine can be turned off again.

But what i was wondering, can i drive around in my car without this electrical device ? Because i can't find any information about this part on the internet and so i can't order it to replace the part..

Does anyone know what the idea of this part is?? And if it's bad for the engine/wiring to drive around without it? If the part is disconnected, the engine runs fine..

Can someone help?? :)

i had a nissan n10 the same as the datsun Cherry i have a book on the n10 is it front wd

Hi phoowy, what year is your Cherry?

It sounds like there is a short in the circuit somewhere -- 12v is feeding to the IGN circuit from the temp. compensator circuit. That's surprising.

The car is from April 1980.

One of the two spools in the temp. compensator is broken..

The car is front wheel drive.. the name N10 sounds familiar :)

Yes, the 1980 Cherry was called the N10 Pulsar in some countries. It was called "310" in the US.

I'm not sure what the temperature compensator is. Is it a part on the carburetor, or something inside the car?

Nah Steve - they're OK. Not the best design gear box-wise but they hang together alright. Electricals are typical Datto/Nissan - reliable and robust.

I'm not a speed devil ;) just a student who wants to have a car that drives him to places from time to time.

The temp. compensator is placed near the battery, a few centimeters from it. The device sets the voltage to 12v for internal clocks and lights. When disconnected from the electrical circuit the battery isn't recharged by the dynamo.

I found a garage that could order a new temp. compensator and today the new part arrived and i replaced the old one. But the problem isn't solved. The battery warning led is still burning when the engine is running.. :(

Ok so now we can see that you are refering to the external regulator for the altenator (dynamo), you guys must have different terms for things overthere. The problem to me without me checking it, sounds like a diode in the dynamo is stuffed. I dont think you have auto electricians overthere but if your mechanic can replace the faulty diode or diodes ( maybe he will just put another or recod dynamo) this is what sounds like it should be done.
Charging light stays on all the time and the car fails to turn off - possible cause, blown diode supplying power to ignition circuit.
Have this checked out.

I had never before heard of a temperature compensator, but found these two:
