Back in my early speedway days (nearly 40 years ago) I made a glass one piece front for a FJ holden and later on did a one piece for LC/LJ torana. Always thought about a one piece for a 1200 but never did it.
Glass is getting way too expensive to work with now if you buy it in small lots.

Just a recurring thought from the past and not to unfeasable considering the awesome skate boards and other stuff using this stuff as an alternative as Bamboo is much better than fibreglass with similar qualities as Kevlar can be painted any colour
Rinspeed, Toyota and Calbee use it for bodies, panels and frames http://gradasishop.com/2636/rinspeed- ... working-vehicle-by-harman http://farm2.staticflickr.com/1129/539518335_9d427ae042_z.jpg http://www.gatsbyonline.com/Users/8/I ... ebakerExtremeliner_03.jpg http://www.designboom.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/meWE13.jpg

I've got pics of alfa's guards and bonnets. They are designed (imo) for 2 litre sports sedans and more about aero (to whatever extent they work) and extending far enough to cover race tyres. They look the goods, to say the least, and aren't really that expensive all things considered. I reckon they might run into trouble with ground clearance on a streeter, and the front air dam more or less 'has' to go together with their guards, or nothing will fit or appear right (in other words, you really have to buy all three of em) so that might affect some people purchasing them.
With respect to weight saving - I honestly reckon you'd have more effect on things by skipping breakfast and lunch on race day, no bull. With regard to the aftermarket guards, they do seem flimsy, maybe the trick is not to try and roll them to flare them, but to remove em, heat the lip and slowly tap them out with the right hammer (I don't know what they are called!) and sand bags underneath. You may even end up lighter with those aftermarket guards than fibreglass, but it'd be a close call (the aftermarket ebay steel ones are very thin). ![]()

Jmac you are correct but Alfa make stock 1200 fiberglass guards as well as the 3" wider guards, they have a fiberglass front ends and they even may do a 1 piece front front if you ask I'd say! There is a green sedan floating around (friends with lagwagon) with the 3" kit and air dam front bar! Looks neat! Alfa also have a FB page you can see the pics of there guards

Jmac i was mainly refering to the stock guards they make as supafatto is talking about.
So are all the eBay ones pretty much the same or is there some out there that are better (by better I mean, quality, fitment or less flimsy) than others? I bought some repro ones years ago back when I was living Adelaide but no idea who, what, or where they came from. Surely things have changed a bit since then.

fair enough - I didn't know about the other guards. The pic I posted (I've got another couple of a bonnet and the front air dam (same as in the above pic) by itself off the car) was one of the pics they sent me, when I emailed them, probably around 4-5 years ago. Does their facebook page have pics of the guards with the more modestly sized arches/flares?

My metal repro guards are definetely better than stock. They don't bend when you lean over to work on engine bay. I bought em second hand but the dude said they were from panelhouse at slacks creek(QLD). Price and quality are great. Not worth the panel beating on the old ones. I'm getting doors, 1/4 panels, front apron and sills for under $1000. Worth it for no rust. Glass foward tilt front end would be sweet though. $$$ might hurt.

OK I meant to post when this went up last week and got side tracked:
For the record the stock fenders are 6 lbs the fiberglass ones I have are 2 lbs each..........save 8 Stock hood is 30lbs and the fiberglass unit weighs 10 lbs.........save 20 Stock trunk lid is 12 lbs and fiberglass is 4 lbs.........save 8 36 lbs is decent, you'd have to eat alot of fiber to shed that but the weight saving would equate to 1.2 horsepower.
