the duty solicitor will help out in victoria. They take you in to a room tell you that you are going to be screwed and will loose your licence then you go in to court and get told to take it easy from now on and just get a huge fine. then you go out, get in your datto and drive home blaming the 1200 :))

Here in Victoria, we have a situation where Police Corruption is at an all time high (low??), we have criminals killing each other with reckless abandon, we have a drug squad that is so evil that it had to be disbanded and many of its members charged with a variety of offences, like corruption, drug dealing, theft etc, etc and yet the management of the Police force remains obsessed with the same bullshit as you are dealing with.
You have to remember two things:- (1) If there is a hard, honest option or a soft easy one, which do you think the average cop will pick? Why do you think that this is so? (2) To repeat myself from previous threads, there are very few things more dangerous to a civilised society than a bored policeman.

In NSW it is illegal to be in possesion of a prohibited drug. It is illegal to administer [inject] a prohibited drug, & it is illegal to be under the influence of a prohibited drug, yet we have this activity going on in Sydneys infamous "shooting gallery" every day of the week. Now if i was to excede the prescribed speed limit at 4am by even a small margin when no other moving vehicle, or person, is around, i am still subject to the full weight of the law & i would be penalised for this awfull offence. I would not even try to get some justice as this is just another revenue stream for our state government. Motorists are easy prey as it costs little or nothing to parasite from them. Druggies cost money, so the problem is just ignored. What should the govt. policy be on druggies found on the street with an overdose? Let the bastards die, & stop wasting my tax dollars. So Jack, you are an enemy of the state, you wreched "U" turner you. Lord knows how many lives were at stake. You should be flogged at the stake, but there's no proffit in that.

Without trying to direct this at any individual, we have all broken a road rule at one time or another. The simple fact is that a road rule is just that for a reason. Does it make sense that its illegal to perform a uturn at an intersection because it could be dangerous? think, on coming traffic and cars turning left into the direction you intend to go, but do they know this?
To compare police management of criminals killing each other and drug dealers to a driving offence is pretty silly. Think about it. Criminals know what they are doing is wrong and arresting them and having them go to jail for a month or 2 isnt really going to make them change their ways. But if they go away for a long time it will make them think more about their actions. So its not easy to just arrest them and send them to jail, a thing called evidence is required. Now think about a driving offence such as the one previously described. Cars are dangerous and by someone not thinking about their actions, could lead to an accident with deadly results. Not to good is it. If a simple ticket and fine with loss of points makes someone think about their actions, then I think thats fair enough that we expect the police to do their job like this.
Remember Just because you dont see criminals getting arrested doesnt mean the police arent doing their job to stop them.

Damn straight Dodgeman !!!!!!!!!! Policing is not about common sence .... only dollars and cents Same reason why we dont actually have to llearn how to DRIVE a car, only to perform a few mindless tricks, smile nicely for the camera and start the lifelong payment process ! Costs too much to actually teach people how to react in confronting situations or give them skills that could save their life ..... noooooooo , much more revenue effective to get them out on the road and into double demerit weekends, speed cameras, radar traps (and illegal U turns) so that each patrol district's "profit centre" can contribute it's bit to the state coffers to be p***ed away on polliticall correct bulls***t. Try riding a motorcycle amongst the great unthinking and see what I mean about driver training Anyway, enough bitching for now, must go and continue with the H145 disc brake upgrade! Cheers

yeah, how dare they book you! Revenue raising bastards! It's not like you did an illegal U-turn or anything...uh...hang on...you did, didn't you? Hell, you even did it in front of a cop car! Life's so unfair. Sorry mate, but when I grew up I was taught that if you do something wrong and you get caught for it, you cop it on the chin. Look, if contributing to the govt coffers in this way pisses everyone off so much, there's a simple answer - drive according to the road rules. If you get fined then, for doing nothing wrong, then I'll listen to you whinge all you want.

There seems to be a lack of understanding about the point(s) that I am trying to make. There is no argument from me that the law has to be upheld, but it is NOT to be used as a bludgeon to harass the public, relieve boredom or generally big note and police should use a little discretion when the transgression is trivial. To do this would generate more public confidence and respect.
That way, they might be able to apply more time, effort, intelligence and integrity to issues that will have a more meaningful effect on the public good.
That is what they are there to do, in theory if not in practice.
