Matt1k, I think the e15et dissy might work. I think they are optical? how many slots do they have in the trigger disc?
If the trigger disc is pattern would work, this would be the easiest way to go (apart from the not so great option of using points). Distributor availability could be a problem though.

E15ET uses the Hitachi D4P distributor.
It has the same type of optical trigger as 280ZX Turbo, E16, CA18DE, SR20DE, and Mitsubishi engines.

* Outer ring is the crankshaft position
* Inner ring is Camshaft Position Sensor

The problem is finding an E15ET distributor, then modding it fit the A-series engine. For MegaSquirt 2 software, the trigger wheel needs to be swapped to a low-resolution wheel. MegaSquirt III software can use the stock high-resolution wheel.

Much easier is bolting on a trigger wheel. For about $1 get a longer bolt and some precision washers available at any auto spares store. The washers space it out to the edge of the pulley. Simple and inexpensive.

I used a toothwheel off a Ford 1.9. But an $8 new sheet-metal wheel would work too.

This gets rid of gear backlash for a rock-steady idle.

I don't think those trigger wheel/ pulley combos aren't as common here in Aus and getting them shipped from the US is not cheap. (I saw a truck load of them at the wreckers in the US). I actually grabbed a couple of them while I was in the US because I've never seen one in Aus.

Looks good, but still would be bit of work. You would need access to a lathe to make the trigger wheel locator. Making a solid sensor mount that has the right gap can also be a bit challenging. On that setup, the altenator must be on the LHS. It would be a challenge to make it fit with the turbo there as well. Probably all doable though.

I did also think of milling 36 teeth into the inner side of the standard pulley. It would take about 30 minutes and not require any parts. The belt "V" grove would be machined deeper to sit the belt a little deeper, probably another 15 mins. Some thought would still have to go into sensor location and mounting. The problem once again, is it would require outsourcing for most people to get done. I'd be happy to do them on a changeover basis, but shipping then adds to cost as well.

The distributor mod on the previous page could be done by most handy folks, and easy take somewhere if someone has trouble with any part of it.

As you say DD, a crank setup would give more accurate timing. With this project, I am having trouble with the constant, effort v cost v required skills v final result, balance issues!!

Good brain food!!!

Why would a lathe be needed? The $8 wheels have a small center hole, just needs to be drilled out to 12mm or so.

These are on DIY Autotune's website.

Probably have to add another $30 to ship around the world.
