Hi Guys,
I recently bought a ute. The previous owner said that he had installed a datsun 120y engine on it. The VIN plate says A12, but how to tell exactly tell what engine it has got atm? are there different versions of A12?
And does anyone know where I can buy a full engine rebuilt kit?

G'day mate and welcome to the forums,

To tell what engine you have, you need to locate the Engine ID Mark which is on the engine block itself. The number is on the left (distributor) side of the engine.

I am led to believe the 120y's came out with A12, A14 and some even A15.

There are variations of each engine.

If it is in fact an A12, there was an "early" and "late" version. The later version (1974 onwards) will have the distributor toward the middle of the block as opposed to being right up the front.

Really appreciate your comment. Will trying looking up for that number 2night. I tried sending PM to bige but didnt get any reply.

On the registration Sticker it says engine number as A14760805. Does this means it is an A14 engine?

If the engine has the same number as that, then yes it will be the A14 (1.4L).

The previous owner could have removed the A14 & fitted an A12, but not change the engine number with the RTA. The only way to be sure is to check the engine number, which is on a machined area behind the distributor. If it had an A14,you'd have thought the seller would have told you.

Finally found the number and it is A12 :) it says A12 290167E. Anyone knows what the other numbers mean?

From your other pic looks like a 120y type later a series as all ignition leeds end up on dizzy near cyl 3.

120Y means A12-powered B210.

A14 powered B210 was not badged as 120Y.

Hi Guys,
Attaching a picture of my engine bay, if this helps. The number engraved on the engine is A12 290167E so I am guess it is an A12 engine.
If it is Datsun 120y A12 will the piston size, rings & gaskets still be the same as normal A12?
