I have oil leaking from my bellhousing,
but I can't really be sure if the leak comes
from the engine (sump seal, crank seal) or my
gearbox (shaft-seal). It could be just leaking onto the flywheel from the engine and being forced back
into the bell-housing.

Is there a trick to determining where the hell
the leak is?

Most likely is the rear main - you should have a dustshield that you can use as
an inspection cover.

yes i agree, rear main leak is more common than the gear box front seal, with the car raised on axel stands and you laying under its about 45mins, but if you can get a hoist you
can cut that down to 20mins to get the box out. and the seals arnt hard to do, just got to get the flywheel out of the way and its all go. by crikey!

Pull the inspection plate off the transmission and look at the fluid. In the states, we run much heavier fluid in the
transmission than the engine.
another trick is to clean it off with brake clean or similair products and start the engine while watching for leaks.Good luck!

Yeah if it's tranny fluid (manual transmission) that has a distinctive NASTY odor. If it's engine oil from the rear main or head or valve cover it should be a little
darker and thinner.
