LittleFireyOne how did you find the Commo KYB dampening rate in your car? Stock Stanza springs?

I didn't yet, a friend of mine with a stanza had gone this way and he's competed in more dirt events than me so I'll quiz him.

Another interesting point is another friend of mine who rallies gave me some advice about 910 struts. As an inexpensive off road setup they soak up bumps well and keep composure relatively well with stock 910 springs.

I did read on one of the other forums - from a popular Adelaide vendor - that the Z31 KYB front inserts are best suited to spring rates over 200lbs, and I think that spring rate would be rather skatie on a B210 on dirt, so perhaps not a great choice.
Interesting info about the 910 strut, I could understand that they would be a subtle up-rate that would work nice on dirt.

You can fit the 910 springs to the 810 strut and have the same thing. As I understand it they are both 2.0" struts but the main difference is 810 comes with large diameter springs and 910 comes with small diameter springs. The 810 struts don't need the special shear ring like the 910 struts do.

Until you go custom stuff with all the specs revealed your pretty much guessing. Stiffer than stock springs are definately good but even stock 200b would be stiffer. And good condition shocks are a must, i never spend big, just get the most out of whatever is the best available from a stock part that is cheap enough

Extra castor is also the best thing you can do besides new shocks

But if it isnt steering too well with the front wheels just steer it with the other end!

I have picked up some LJ Torana caster rods - not exactly sure if they fit the same as they did when I had my 510 but will find out. On my 510 I had the LJ rods threads machined further back for more adjustment - though cutting threads is not the best engineering solution... The added caster made a huge difference to handling.
Doing some reading and have short listed some Kings KDFL-01 120-220lb progressive rate springs if they fit the 810 struts. They are stated to fit a 180b/610. I'm probably leaning towards using offset standard strut tops as I'm not keen on running without sealed thrust bearings, and the aftermarket ones are rather expensive.

^ Just noticed that those springs won't fit the 120Y strut towers

I eventually bought maddat castor rods. After modding and breaking lots of modified and larger ones.

Maddat ones are awesome and huge. Only thing i could pick is they dont have a lock nut on the back, and that nut provided comes loose. I got extra nuts the second time (for my other car) so i could lock them against each other.

Im still using stock strut tops. I would like to go adjustable tops as we had trouble matching camber on the last alignment. Im not sure what the most robust option is for that but i'd like to hear your solutio

I have also modified XB-XF Falcon caster rods in the past for 510's. They are very large diameter compared to 120Y stuff. The two bolt holes on them don't line up so a black smith use to cut it off and re-shape part of the shaft to suit a shortened application for Datsuns. The besuty of this is that you don't have cut threads - which are a stress raiser point (which you don't get with rolled threads).
I have re-drilled 510 stock strut tops in the past for more camber and caster. IIRC you just spin them 180deg and re-drill them offset a bit.
I have seen some aftermarket and home made strut tops used on Datsuns without a thrust bearing and the statement by Baz at Datsport on their website is correct, they have lots of stiction without a thrust bearing. Not many options here others than spending around $500 on a good setup or making something from scratch. I might see if I can buy some similar to factory thrust bearings and machine something up one day. I have seen a strut tower with a plate welded in that was offset and slotted like a strut top, might be an idea... though not a friendly mod for a car that's to be registered.

Yes Datsun Competition recommended modding the stock strut tops for 2 degree camber change (see Strut Tops for details)

NOLTEC made a rubber bushed strut top specifically for the 1200/120Y: Noltec N44071 polyester bushed for street use (bell above)
