Stumbled across this article in my search for another Datsun, now that I've sold the camper trailer and have room in the garage :) I know Murph's been mentioned here before as a 1200 SSS owner - well here it is! Pretty cool :)

For those on the other side of the pond, Greg Murphy is a retired professional racer. One of the fastest V8 Supercar (our premier motorsport category) drivers we've seen.

Sure it was a factory special. Nissan Motor Distributors Ltd (NZ) shipped engines to Papakura, and modified engines are then sent back to Nissan Motors Distributors where they were mated to new 1200s on the assembly line.

SSS featured Twin Carbies, racing cam, coby extractors, gauges, steering wheel, Ward alloys, SSS badges, stripes and bucket seats were added. It was more than a trim package and proved how good the round-port engine could be (more HP than the GX oval-port engine). The SSS option cost $543 NZD in 1972, making it quite the expensive little car.

1200 SSS are for sale every so often. There's a 120Y SSS for sale on Trademe now.

Found an article from 2014 at http://www.nzherald.co.nz/motoring/ne ... ?c_id=9&objectid=11228197

He has cautionary tales of his own, writing off his beloved first car, a Datsun 1200SSS ... Favourite car of all time? "Definitely the 69 Dodge Charger.

That story a bit misleading.
He bought an above average condition deluxe sedan off a mate of mine. (It was a low kms car, that was pretty mint in my eyes) And reshelled a poked sss.

Wow, a non-numbers matching body, fitted with original SSS parts ... some might call that a clone car

NZ assembled datsuns only had the one square tag, held on by four screws. So it's pretty hard to tell when a car has been re-shelled. The coupes were assembled in Japan, and they all had a chassis number matching the one on the tag stamped into the body.
I cut up a 310 coupe once that had a number stamped into it too. But others did not?
