Rallytwit,
Ive come to notice that track guys are the ones who tend to realise more about the importance of gear ratios for racing.
I guess for a street car its not necessary..

Dave, while the T50 box is strong the stock ratios still suck. I've been beating up all the options to get a sturdy box with decent ratios that won't cost $2500-$3000........or more.
Rallytwit for your application purposes, not only does the t50 ratios suck, it weighs more than 15kg more than a 56 5 speed close ratio which is a few kilos heavier than a 56 4 speed close ratio.in my opinion i wouldn't add a heavy gearbox without close ratio gearsets for a naturally aspirated a-series motor.Might get away with it for turbo or supercharged applications. For track cars, once you go close ratio gearsets, theres no going back to stock wide ratios.Even better if matched with the right diff ratio and tire sizes.
Heres a link to a 56A 4 speed close ratio gearbox with straight cut gears being sold on ebay but in portugal. His happy to ship worldwide. USD 1500 buy it now not including shipping and other taxes.

"..more than the power of the motor gearbox turns out to have more importance because it can harness the power of a more linear way keeping the engine always at high revs without losing between gear changes..."
