Is it necessary to ground the starter solenoid to the body? I have not.

A long time ago I was having ground problems on a starter on a another car. It's just an extra length of ground cable. Overkill I guess.
So I would say not necessary.

In a 1200, the starter is grounding via the bolts fastening it to the engine block. So as long as the engine block is grounded, no worries
