Interested to know how this conversion goes as I am looking to keep my sedan auto and add a little boost.

The stock Datsun 1200 auto can handle a little boost. I would just add a transmission cooler

Cooler fittings are already there

4N71B is not necessarily any stronger than the 3N71B. It has an extra overdrive gear and lockup converter, neither of which add strength, they only lower the RPMs for highway cruising

Stock 1200 auto can handle 10 psi boost

I haven't heard of anyone doing a 4N71B swap into a 1200

I have been contemplating this myself for the wagon. Got the 4N71B already . I aim to do it this year. Just cant decide what ratio for diff and color to paint. Im sure if it can handle a VL it can handle A14 S/C 10 psi boost

the 4n71b was never offered as a light duty box as far as Im aware and sat behind in cars with over 200lbs of torque with no issues. There is a RE50RO5A 5 speed that could be adapted and run manually also but for the 4n71b best speak to KEAS they know the Jatcos well for rotaries, RBs, SRs and even Geminis that run over 500hp.
http://keas.com.au/products.php

JATCO 4N71B inc Rotary

Up to 450hp modified to suit various engine combinations
C omponents to suit rebuilders

Full manual forward pattern valve bodies
Engine braking in ALL gears
Transbrake forward pattern valve bodies
Engine braking in ALL gears
VASCO Plus input & intermediate shafts sets
Billet intermediate servo/piston sets
Billet over-drive servo/piston sets
Cast alloy pans
Shift kits

the 5 speeds are smaller lighter than the old 4 speeds
but the ecu is in the valve body so to eliminate that
and convert to full manual you need an expert but maybe
very worthwhile if you want an efficient auto

4N71B is a 3N71B (same gears and all) but with a middle section added for the overdrive assembly

The "duty" depends on the specs. For example: Turbo models have more clutch plates and larger clutch pistons, but are still labeled 4N71B Automatic

With the 3N71B, the 1200 version had 3 low-gear clutch plates, while the 280Z version had 5 plates to handle the higher torque

Some say L4N71B was light duty, but it actually means:
* L4N71B - Lockup torque converter
* E4N71B - Electronic-control lockup torque converter

The biggest problem I foresee with a 4N71B swap is slower acceleration. All the torque converters are made for larger engines, so the A12/A14 won't spin it up very far. The gears are exactly the same ratios (1st, 2nd, 3rd) so no advantage there

Solution: For adequate initial acceleration, use a stiff rear diff gear, maybe 4.625 out of Datsun 1000 Ute. With the .686 overdrive it'll still run lower revs on the highway compared to a 4-speed manual with stock 3.9 gear

You could also order a custom torque converter for a small engine (the stock 3N71B converter can't be used in a 4N71B due to the lockup interface). This will help greatly with take-offs, but not with accelerating the car once at road speeds

Best combo might be:
* Custom medium-stall converter for low-torque engine
* 4.11 gears from Datsun 1000
* 4N71B with overdrive
