Hi guys,
I am still deciding between rebuilding a stock A12 engine or upgrading it to CA18Det.
Just a little confused about fuel system.
The traditional A12 has got a mechanical fuel pump which pulls fuel from the fuel tank however i believe Ca18det has got an electrical one.
What changes do I have to do if I go CA way?
Kind regards
Ron.

You can use the CA18 fuel pump in your Datsun

Changes you need to make to run a CA18 include:
* Hydraulic clutch conversion parts
* Custom Engine & Gearbox Mounts
* S13 Radiator
* Bigger Diff (ute diff for stock CA18DET)
* Custom tailshaft
* Custom hosing for radiator and intercooler
* Custom Exhaust
* Wiring
* Fuel pump hosing filters, return line, surge tank

thanks dd :)
- Bigger Diff
Will the stock Diff be able to handle the torque from CA18Det? I was reading about members using hilux/s13 diff. Can I use any hilux diff or it has to be of a specific year make?

- Front brakes
any particular strut I can use?

- Fuel system
I can install any external fuel pump? and what is a surge tank for?

Thanks again

Stock Datsun 1200 coupe/sedan diff is not strong enough

Stock Datsun 1200 ute diff can handle the torque of a stock CA18DET (166 ft lb). If running high boost levels you'll need a larger diff

Most common brake swap is put the S13 brakes on the 1200 strut

Use the fuel pump from the CA18DET (S13 or S14 fuel pump) -- it's factory designed to work with a stock CA18DET. Many use aftermarket fuel pump for their highly modified CAs

You can use a lift pump from the standard tank which feeds into a high pressure pump required for fuel injection. Most do this using a surge tank to avoid starving the pumps. See the diagram. I simplified this on my ute by removing the standard tank, installing a fuel cell and mounting the fuel pump below the tank, so the pump is gravity fed.

Thanks guys,
@Elrich11 Well explained :)
Do you happen to have pics of your conversion? Did you upgrade your rear axle?

I have a build thread on this site called Elrich11's CA18DET 1200 ute Http://datsun1200.com/modules/newbb/v ... hp?topic_id=64081&forum=9 I did upgrade the diff to a Borgwarner from an R31 skyline.

I was thinking about the schematic in this thread on the way to work. The EFI filter is in the wrong spot, they go after the fuel filter in every stock setup I've seen and for a good reason. With the filter before the pump there's nothing to stop wear debris from the pump clogging the injectors, the pump its self has bigger passages in it to deal with foreign matter that the injectors do.

My set up is very similar, lift pump, surge tank, high pressure pump, filter, rail then fuel return. The surge does not need to be big for normal use. I have about 400mL at the moment and no issues.

No, not any pump. The EFI pump needs to be of sufficient pressure for your EFI system (from 14psi to 100psi depending, Datsun EFI is around 37 psi)

You don't even need a lift pump or surge tank -- most OEM fuel injection doesn't use either. With older partially baffled tanks (like the 1200 tank) some OEMs use a fuel/air separator with no surge tank. See our tech article: OEM Tank
