I wonder if anyone has had this problem. I have a B211 with a bouncy front end. After dismantling the strut assembly I discovered the old refillable strut inserts weren't functioning as intended. The cork seal/washer is still there but the plastic bush.spaced had crumbled and I doubt I could get a repair kit. I bought some Armstrong "heavy duty" sealed inserts which fit snugly but come up quite close to the top and the strut cap cannot be screwed down (see pic). Short of having the screw cap re-machined is there anything I can do? Either repairing the old strut inserts or finding a way to use the ones I bought?

Yes, that happens when the inserts are too long. Which Armstrong part number are they?

Another possibility is that they aren't going into the strut tube all the way. Snug fitting ones sometimes don't slide all the way in, but usually sanding the outside of the inserts will let them go in further

Thanks ddgonzal. I get a satisfying clunk when it hits the bottom so I think it is sitting right. It is more their girth as the maximum inner diameter of the cap is about 4mm too narrow to slip over the insert and the rounded which should sit over the rounded shoulder of the insert is narrower still. I'll dig out the part number when I'm home but suspect I need to get some alternatives.

Are those the original caps from the struts? They just look second hand is why I ask. Usually strut inserts come with their own new, yellow galv. caps to suit the inserts.

Yes, Original ones are black and come with a seal

But strut insert cartridges usually come with new yellow nut-caps with no seal (because the inserts have a built-in seal)

B211 comes with 45mm strut tubes (same as Datsun 1200). Those inserts above look like larger ones for the 2.0" strut tubes. Sometimes they will fit, sometimes not

45mm inserts are around 38-40mm diameter. 2.0 inch inserts are about 42mm diameter. 2" struts are used by the PB210, GB211 and HB210.USA

Here's original ringnut-cap with the rubber bits (the Gland) pulled out. Notice they are slightly less than 45mm

Ahaha. The inserts did not come with any new caps. The one in the photo was the original with the rubber pulled out. If I had the new caps I think I would be back in business.

My inserts are 38.5mm in diameter BTW and 430mm from the very bottom to the end of the orange at the shoulder. Max length to the top of the thread is 475mm compressed and 650 extended. A tough job it was to extend them by hand it was too.

Not sure but I think the new caps are same height as original? They go into the tube about 12mm or so

Monroe sell new caps for use with their inserts (Monroe lock-ring 137-A61-017), so maybe Armstrong has them available separately also
