Bought myself a new timing light and am now REALLY confused.

The motor seems to run a bit rich but that's not the confusing bit - It seems to be timed at about 40 degrees BTDC with the timing light but when I manually line up the rotor button to point at the No.1 plug it's 5 degrees - the only thing I can think of is that someone has put a wrong pulley on the motor at some stage because there's only one mark and its on the front of the pulley (I thought there were supposed to be about 5 marks on the engine side of the pulley).

What's going on??? - Any advice?

Is the vacuum advance hose connected? If so disconnect it.

I had to mark TDC on the timing cover and pulley with a white pen just to see it with the timing light.

Yeah that's irrelevant. To statically set timing like that you want to go where the breaker points open. At 7 degrees BTDC

5. Rotate housing anti-clockwise -- slowly -- until a spark appears at the coil wire
6. Tighten distributor hold-down bolt
