Probably way too big but the 6L80 transmission in my Commodore has a huge spread of ratios. I believe the modern transmissions require calibration (tuning) for the application though.

78mm bore A15 would be a fine auto engine

The 6 speed toyota rwd automatic is actually
smaller than the older 4 speed and equal to
the 5 speed and removable bellhousings.

I like the Toyota transmission.

Might as well go with a Beams or 1JZ with it instead of adapting a Q motor.

There also is the Diesel YD engines with the 2.5 max
figures of 190hp & peak 332lbs of torque @ 2000rpm!
Youd probably need a 2.75 to 1 diff ratio :)
The 2.2 YD version would be fine and shorter height
shorter stroke with choice of 5 or 7 speed autos

Never heard of a diesel 1200 coupe but that kind
of engine with super highway diff would probably
get you 60-70 miles per gallon

Darn youd thing USA would get diesel X-trails and D40 Navs

how about 2.2 turbocharged perkins
eg.
https://www.perkins.com/en_GB/products ... -syncro/17-22-syncro.html

or is there a cheap one from a local usa car that you could use?
nissan cd20et is not a bad motor I thought was avail in USA, Canada & mex
its based as a beefier ca18de design quite compact and simple but if you
have an A15 Im sure itd make a good daily anything around 280lbs engine
weight like the ka24de youd probably consider the equal weighing vg20e

Congrats on you coupe purchase

No sense paying attention to USDM diesel. Diesel fuel cost more than petrol/gasoline in US. We don't get the small Nissan or Perkins deisels. VW had good performing diesels but turns out they were polluting 40x more than the competition

in the 1960/1970s US truck drivers preferred petrol engines - quieter, more power, more flexibility. However truck owners paying the bills preferred longevity and fuel economy. Hence why long distance trucking switched over to mostly diesel in the 1970s
