IPRA Bathurst 2019 Race 3 - JCox Datsun 1200 Turbo

Johnny Boston from Trackshcool was kind enough to lend me this rocket after the Zook failed. Its got a CA18det, Skyline gearbox, Hilux diff, Bilstein shocks and plenty of grunt. Had breathing issues all weekend and kept pushing oil out of the catch cans. Started rear of grid for race 2 and 3. Race 2 we turned the boost down to try and make it last, which it didn't. Race 3 we cranked it right up and just wanted to get as far up the road as possible! Looking back taking to the grass up the hill wasn't my finest moment but everything else I was fairly happy with. Except I did forget to turn off the launch switch at the start, whoops! I definitely found myself racing without a clear mind after working non stop on the car all weekend and racing the Evo in the 6hr. The boys did a great all weekend to help keep the car on track, couldn't have done it without them.

Make sure you watch right until the end, I parked the car in a really cool spot and left the camera running. You get an awesome perspective of how fast some of the Improved Production cars.

It's CA18DET. Is this the same coupe that had the A12? Main Forum: Wow, Datsun1200 turbo

This one looks like it has sedan door panels ...

Johnny Boston`s 1200

pity it had breathing issues, I wonder if it had all the proper mods that are usually
needed for ca18det to have proper oil drainage or was there another issue?

ca18det are very underrated little beasts. Not many know there is a factory diesel
bottom ends with full counterweight crank, bulletproof thicker bigger bores and taller deck available that gives them 2 litres and up.

Basically a Nissan version of the mitsu 4g63 is possible but lighter as it doesnt
have a counter balance shaft built into the block.

A shame the ca20de was never to be as Japan gets subsidies and tax breaks to make new
engines, new molds, new internals rather than developing an existing engine as Mitsubishi
keeps doing as its owned by the Government unlike the privately owned japanese car makers.

There is some serious talent required to reel in the obvious drawbacks of the 1200 chassis
with such powerful engines that would do better in a longer wheelbase lightweight machine.
A great engine for a Locost as I recently found out!

Not quite right boys ....
Jordan did drive Simon's coupe at the Nationals last year but this one is McGee's old coupe. Was sold to an IPRA competitor who then sold it to John. Jordan did a double stint - drove both IPRA and the 6 hour on that weekend.
Cheers,
