OK,

so i just found this

remote mount mechanical pumps

fancy pants...

still need to consider a bypass hose somewhere and heater pipes

Heater pipes sholld be able to be tapped off the back of the head.
Plenty of mazda options here - dependant on space behind the head.
here is one example of how you can get the heater pipes working, with that mazda head - heaps of others
mx5 thermostat spacer

Oh that’s a fancy expensive pump.

I essentially would machine the non moving parts side and a factory pump can be employed.. With a spot on the front timing plate to bolt up.

A full billet pump would be cool, but talk about endeavors.

So you would put the datsun standard pump back in it original home and machine the adapter plate? Is that what you mean?

Im pretty sure that one of the idlers sits there - you could use the water pump in that idlers place to get around that problem

It wouldn't sit in its factory spot.

Reubs,
The mazda thermostat is not on a good place thats for sure but the biggest problem is the guys
that dont keep the coolant fresh not really its commuter design. At over 6k rpm which is virtually
2% of the owners a good oil cooler, better capacity radiator and fresh coolant is plenty.

The remedy is simple in that you use a better custom head gasket that blocks the initial 2 cylinder
water passages from head to block bore sides that way the water goes into the front first cooling
the first 2 cylinders then flows over easier to the rear of the head, down the block and basically
does a U turn across the head and back under after hitting the rear etc.

Many folks have been concerned when water galleries are closed on later headgaskets on many engines
but the engineers eventually worked out this was the way to remedy cooling issues the cheapest way
and the most logical way. Using the back of the head works as well but is more complicated and only
usually suits big engine bays and FWD. We want to place the engine as far back towards the firewall.

Just in case dont forget VW pump for big v8s are cheaper for external units and easily can be
wired up to show when they fail. Cheap enough to keep a spare in the glove box as well!

Matt..
The factory A series pump is a massive unit to play with good luck!
another option was to grind a water passage from the from the front of the block
to the waterpump cavity and use a smaller common cheaper stand alone waterpump
like the one I posted earlier for the Mitsubishi/chrysler unit.
Real estate is limited so its quite a challenge. Looking forward to your ideas!

Also folks would not need a complete kit
just a how to online and the part numbers
or tensioners/parts required etc.

The front plate
oil pump adaptor for mazda pulley
headgasket
(Rob was making his own units with sealant until
I passed him the number of a bloke who makes them
from sydney for $100 a pop any design just send
a photocopy or tracing of what you need.)
http://swansonsgaskets.com.au/#xl_Xxr_v2_Custom
This mob made gaskets cheaper than I could get for
my Deutz 6FL912 engine which came from Germany.

Water galleries could be improved as mentioned earlier
by blocking off the first few on cylinder 1 and even
2 as enough fresh water gets here and it would make
it flow like a U turn from the back passages down
into the rear of the block and back to the front.

seems to be all that is needed.

The cam looking bearing sitting alone in that pic
is still a mystery unless Reubs knows better atm???

Those "auxiliary" water pumps for the VW - are they in addition or to replace to the standard mechanical pump on the VW?
They seem far too small to be a replacement unit - they look like aquarium pumps!

If you used several in the circuit to push / pull water in the correct path - say one at the output of the radiator, one at the back of the head.

Another thing to note about pulling water from the back of the head is that in every east-west application of the B6, the water is pulled from the back of the head. If you believe the mazda nuts, this was the intended design of the motor and the north-south setup in the MX5 was an afterthought.

Im pretty confidant that I can get the water out the back. I want to use the mazda cam timing mech as well and that pokes out the back too.

I've worked it out on those two mystery parts.

the one in the centre with the keyway goes between the datsun cam and the mazda pulley to drive the oil pump/fuel pump

the simple tube thingo sits between the datsun crank and the mazda crank pulley to make it sit correctly.

Both are needed to make it all work as expected.

This is very close to what I am doing on the back side of the timing plate instead of the block. O-ring seal and a water passage flowing in the typical direction, but the remote WP pushes through the hose bib. No mod needed for the engine block.

After looking at the idea to machine the back of the adapter plate to allow the water to pass where it would as per standard datsun setup (albeit without the pump to push/pull it), sounds like simple idea.
I don't have my plate in front of me (its about 1500km away right now), but im sure its flat in that area.
edit : I have just taken snips of the 3d model using an online viewer - yep its flat there.

Robs original design has the port bolted straight out the middle, however the plate I have doesn't have this setup and is the image file you have Matt.

in the image you can just see the two adapters behind the crank pulley and the cam pulley

The other benefit of the external mechanical waterpump idea is that it provides a 3rd point for the v-belt to tighten against. I am planning on aircon and alternator, but a 3rd pulley in there somewhere would help keep it all tight.
My mazda crank pulley has two v-belt spaces, so I can run both with ease - but still that extra point will help tighten it all up properly.
