I have odd things like that happen too, mostly when i brake hard the warning light comes on but the brakes work fine, and the fluid level is if anything a bit too high in my resovour.

I figured it had to do with fluid surge and making the sensor read falsely.

I get the impression that the light on the dash wouldn't tell you if your brakes were failing unless it's because of loss of fluid.

umm yeah i would suggest that is has something to do with the fluid level. If you have no leaks anywhere, then either its a faulty sensor, or well I dont think that surgin is a huge probelm in brake fluid canisters.

I would check for leaks, then check the wiring. if that fails, then put up with it, or forkout for a sparky to check it out.

It is just a low fluid level light, has floats in the brake fluid tanks. Fill 'em right up or "adjust" the wiring. Wasn't on early vehicles. You aren't talking about the hand/park brake light? if so it is probably a loose connection flapping around.

If you have recently put fluid in the master cylinder, unscrew the switch and then screw it back in as it has to seat on a groove in the slide in the pushrod inside the cylinder where the rubbers are, sometimes when the fluid is low and it is refilled the slide moves to a different spot and when you refill it the switch pickup sits on a different area and needs re-seating

71-73 Datsun 1200s have a standard brake light -- it tells you if the front/rear fluid pressure is out of whack. Here's what the 1200 factory "Chassis and Body" manual says:Quote:
Warning Lamp
This lamp functions both hand brake warning lamp and service brake line pressure differential warning lamp.

When a difference between front and rear brake line pressure rearches the rated rang [13 to 17 kg/cm2 (185 to 242 lb/sq in)], the ground circuit for the warning lamp is closed, and the warning lamp lights.
Sounds like what B210sleeper is experiencing. Time to bleed the brakes and/or look for internal or external leaks.

Some newer cars do have float levels for fluid level. If you have electrical wires going into the cap or reservoir, that's what it is.

thanks guys, so all it is is that the warning light is getting a signal that the fluid is low so the warning light goes off. thats ok i might give it a top up.

i have an 81 sunny 310 ( when i signed up i knew nothing of datsuns! ) so my brake light is only activated by fluid level, I suspect that the sensors are out of whack, because the car stops fine and pedal feel is very nice. I also had bled the brakes all around and put in fresh fluid when I replaced the hoses and calipers.
