RTV or gasket for timing cover at water pump?

Hi guys,

I am about to fit new timing cover and noticed a little bit of corrosion on block around water pump ports. I am keen to use paper gasket only between timing cover and block but I fear that I will have a leak due to the corrosion pits. Am I best to use some blue RTV just around the problem areas an include gasket as well, or am I best to scrap the gasket and use RTV only? I am worried that if I use gasket and apply RTV locally on the pitted area, then there will be a small step where RTV stops and paper gasket continues. Maybe it is too small a step to worry about?

If I do use RTV alone in the place of the gasket (not use paper gasket at all), then what RTV am I best to use? Is there an RTV colour that is suitable for both oil and water? I have Permatex blue and black currently. I was planning on using the black for ends of rubber oil seals on oil pan.

Cheers guys.

That's the beauty of RTV, it is stepless when applied per directions.

Yes, i would apply to pitted area only, and use paper gasket

Color does not matter. For cars with catalytic converter the color is important

Although it works fine as a gasket too, it is just tricky to use correctly use the small amount needed
Here's the water pump on my 1200
