2 inch max. I would recommend 1-3/4 inch.

2 inch would be good on a worked A14 maybe, but not a stock A12.

There's a difference between "looks good" and "goes good"..especially on a stocker

Yeah I had a 2" with a mild A14 back in the day and I think it suited perfect.
I only run a 2.5" press bent exhaust with my CA18DET,

i have a question for the exhaust buffs out there.

I know that too big an exhaust is not so good for a motor. I have been told this is due to a lack of back pressure, which will burnout valves.

Not that i dont believe that, but my logic says that the bigger the better.
I would think that the quicker the exhaust gasses leave the scene of the crime, the more available space for fresh fuel/air mix. This is the reason that you port/polish your head and match to the headers.
At the drags lots of folk remove the exhaust altogether and my bros super-mod just runs headers with hotdogs and no equalizer pipe which you aparently need on twin/split exhaust systems.

Can someone please explain exactly what the story is with this so called evil back pressure and buring valves or is this an old wives tale and Whats the equaliser pipe for on split/twin systems?

thanks

If bigger is better, why don't Porsche use 4" exhausts? They use smaller ...

Anyways, I'd recommend:
- Stock A12: 1.5 inch exhaust (factory size)
- A12 with headers/extractors: 1.75 inch

There's no point in bigger, because the exhaust ports only flow so much ... and what size is the extractors? If they are only 1.75 inch at the exit, a bigger pipe won't do anything.

if the exhaust is too big it reduces the velocity of the gas as it leaves the ports. If you send a gas down a tube and that tube narrows at some point the gas speeds up as it passes through at the same time back pressure is created before the narrowing. If the tube widens out too much, the gas slows down. Getting the right size exhaust is just a matter of finding a diameter of tube that doesn't create excessive back pressure but still keeps the gas velocity high. Go and have a yarn to the blokes at your local exhaust shop as they have years of experience and will know whats good for your application

I run 2.5 inch, combined with 4 into 1 headers. I have had great results with my A14 engine in my race car.

I used to run a 2 inch system......but for me, the 2.5 inch system appears to give more power and throttle response to the A14.
