I dont really know what you are refering to as the male and female, but hopefully its the loop wire on the back of the tacho.
In your description it sounds like you connected it in parallel to the ignition supply to the coil. ( It should be in Series )
I am not sure of the wiring loom in the late model utes, so the easiest way to tell you to connect the tacho is:
Remove the wires that run to the positive side of the coil. Get a test light or multimeter and checK which of these wires has power when the key is in the on position. ( only required if there is more than one wire. I would think it has atleast 2 wires on the positive side of the coil )
Now this positive wire leave disconnected from the coil. Connect some wire of the same size or a little thicker to this positive wire and run it into the cabin and connect it to the tachos loop wire. Connect some more wire to the other side of this loop wire and then run it back into the engine bay and connect it to the coils positive side.
Now start the car. If the tacho fails to work, swap the loop wires around and restart the car and see if the tacho works.
If it doesnt work you have done something wrong with your wiring or you have burnt your tacho
