#2 SU Carb Help
Errrnstak Posted on: 2000/3/18 9:18
I made the 2 hour drive home with no problems. I picked up my new header and installed it and the dual SU carbs today. I'm having problems with the carbs though. First of all, where are the
overflow lines from the float bowl supposed to go to? I was able to get it started by hooking the lines up to the fuel return lines, is that where they should go? It started up right away and
ran great, so I pulled it out and started driving. Drove about 1 block (or less) and it started running rough, and stepping on the gas would make it die rather than rev up. Then the idle
would go really high (4,000 rpm) and not want to drop down. It seemed to me like a vaccuum leak, but I haven't found any leaks yet. On the drive home I couldn't floor it otherwise it would
bog down and die. I had to be really light footed to go anywhere and it was spitting and sputtering the whole way. It gulped a ton of gas on such a short drive. I haven't set the float level
yet, but I know they're getting enough (maybe too much?) fuel as it was running super rich the whole way home. Another thing I noticed is that at idle the needle/plunger in the front carb was
about half open, and on the rear carb it wasn't up at all...what does that mean? I took the carbs all the way apart and cleaned everything out, and everything seemed to be fully functional.
The little valves that let gas in the float chambers don't leak at all, and the needles sure don't look bent or anything. Could it just be the floats need to be adjusted? I don't know much
about SU carbs, so any help would be greatly appreciated, feel free to email me at errrnstak@hotmail.com if you can help or just post it on here. See ya!

Hey hows it going, I have a Marshall Cavendish Car Fixit Handbook, with an article on tuning the SU carb, it covers everything in detail, if you are interested I could get
it scaned or something, cause I can't be stuffed typing it all out.
