Yeah, I agree with you, I'll switch over to a A15 and 5-speed when I get the money (maybe next summer? going to college) and use a Tomei intake manifold with a Webber 45 DCOE and nismoparts.com header, fab a exhaust back from the header and camshaft. Prob look into Pit Road for internals.

the a12 to go fast I rev the crapper out of it and change gear as quick as possible, good for racing/rally

I have to agree it was like night and day when i changed my A12 with a A-14 and i have never ever looked back

Guys,

My 1200 ute is under going an upgrade to a A15 with a mild street cam, Twin Su's and extractors. Basically a standard upgrade that will give me mild street performance. I hadn't thought about a 5 speed gear box until I read below.

1) Do I need one . What difference does it make??

2) What model do the 5 speed gear boxes come out of. Are they hard to find, what are the $'s involved.

cheers,

Daz

Five speed?
No, you don't "need" one, in the same way that you dont "need" the A15 & all the trimmings, but one of these definately will enhance your Datsun driving experience.

If you are into long distance cruising, then the "overdrive in fifth" version will help things along, but the "direct in fifth" is the close ratio box thats best for "sporty" driving.

They have been available in small Datsuns since the 1200 & the ones from the A14/15 models are bigger & stronger.
They are not exactly "cheap", but they are good value.

Check the tech section for some additional info.

mate if you want the best of both world, in my opinion your better of with the A14 it will rev but will also be a lot torqueir than the A12. the A15 has bags of torque but in my expirience doesn't like reving past 5ooorpm. they start to shake heaps. now with the A13 that one of the other fellows mentioned, from what i found out is that the A13 is an A12 block with an A14 crank and rods with A12 pistons.

The most common version of the A13 seems to be basicly an A14 engine with the smaller 73mm bore size.

Both the A13 & A14 share the same stroke of 77mm & the same con rod length of 133mm [C to C] while the 1200 rod is 121.5mm long
From this i conclude that the A13 block is taller than the A12, & is really a small bore version of the A14.

There is a rarer version of the A13 that has the A12 sized block, with the shorter rod & the 1200's 70mm stroke. This one has a 76mm bore.
Boring an A12a engine to it's second oversize will duplicate ti specs of this version of the A13.

Red4go, where are you, chuck it in your profile please

depending on where you are in the world a 5 speed can be from US$50-75? - AUS$900+

u can have the best of both words u can build a cheap motor that will rev and power u will need at a budget ,it will take two motors .u will need an A12 & A14 .put the crank out of the A12 and use it in the A14 block machine the A14 block hight to match piston hight .thats all u need to do .is a good combo .

1200RallyCar,

I have updated my profile, I am in Adelaide. I have checked everywhere, even obscure country town wreckers in the middle of no where, but these Sunny 5 speed gearboxes don't exist, it seems like the Holy Grail of the Dato world!!! I think you would need to be at the right wrecker at the right time to score one.

From what I have read there would seem to thousands of these in the US. If they only cost approx $100 and say another $500 to get it shipped down here then why not source these from the US?????? Has anybody else tried this??? It can't be that hard.

Daz

In my opinion, if everything else is considered equal, more capacity equals more horespower - you just can't beat cubes!

My race a15 runs mostly standard datsun parts and revs beyond 8000rpm easily. If your bottom end is balanced properly it will not shake. I believe any 'decent' engine rebuild should involve a balance. Check with local engine shops for quality / accuracy of balancing.

Previous posts mention a15's not revving beyond 5k. This is probably true of worn, standard engines. I guess it all comes down to what you are prepared to do to this engine!
