Hi guys got a decent project at uni, build a formula sae car. Just trying to pick a few brains here, any ideas for a diff that we can run via chain drive??? the idea is to run a honda CBR600 engine and gearbox, and run the chain straight to the diff.

no diff, just get a balanced inch bar, and drive it off that, use a key to get drive to the wheels and a bolt and a pin throught the end to hold em on!

um.... well... we were going a bit more high tech than that.... independant rear suspension, that kind of thing... and i remember you mentioning something about rear mounted vehicles understeering once... and now your saying go a solid axle????

yeah true, so ur goin independent? u shoulda clarified more in ur post. like i said to u before, look at the set up most modern cars have, and adopt it from that, if i was u and was goin for a light wait and well handling car, id go double wish bone suspension, with a solid axle that runs to the side of the kart were a uni conects to another solid axle which connects to a uni that connects to the wheel, u shouldnt need to much wheel travel so u should be pretty safe. and as for the need for the shaft from uni to uni goes, try a cup and ball set up where the axle has a little round ball at the end of it which fits in to a cup, the cup has to slits in it which a little pin fits through the ball of the axle. i think it is a good idea and i would be using it for sure.

Yep.....Bullshit..
You don't go to Curtin...
The only team in WA that runs a CBR motor...................is..................
UWA!!!!!
Your identity has been revealed!!!!!!
You should probably run a Ford 9 inch diff. Any serious race car uses one.

Harley trikes [Servicar] used a chain drive diff, but these are a live axle, & are a bit hard to find in Australia. What did the S600 Honda sports car use? I always thought it was a chain driven diff, but i have never seen one.

no reason you can't adapt a chain ring to a Quaife LSD (or whatever) and custom CV driveshafts (you wouldn't run power sapping uni joints). Not uncommon on motorbike powered hillclimbers. I'd suggest getting along to a hillclimb and talk to some of those guys.

mr DATSIK... what uni do you go to??? Let me guess... Curtin... (why else would you tell me to go 9 inch) and your name... Brett????
I admit, I'm not in the current Curtin team. But I most certainly go to curtin... my profile has read "engineering student at curtin uni" ever since I joined the forum...
