also just wondering what L series is best in everyones opinion. how much of a power increase i can expect over a standard a14, if anyone has done the conversion how much in total it cost them and if anyone has bits that would help me out with the conversion and are looking to sell them let me know please for eg. clutch master, good con l seriees etc etc

depends what the purpose of the car is, but the best L series candidates for the 1200 are either:
* Late L16 (Stanza)
* L20B (200B, SI/II Bluebird)
because they have the correct sump/dipstick config. The L16 block will accept the L18 internals with a 2mm overbore.

my old standard L20 with twin 40 Dellortos and a 76 cam made 108hp at the wheels. It would take a pretty serious A14 to do that.
The other early L16 and all L18 blockes will be Ok if you use the Stanza/200B sump and pickup, but you will also need to either drill the block to move the dipstick, or weld a tube into the sump for it.

yea ive just started an l20b conversion and trx 5 spd into 1200 sedan. i havnt got eng in yet still measuring but it looks like gearstick will be back approx five inches hand brake back the same. im going to try using the bluebirds master cyl for clutch and itrs radiator fits perfectly witdth wise but only just hight, eg bonnet only cople of mm from radiator cap. all this is from a 1982 blue bird station wagon i picked up. as far as performance i have personally been in a 1200 sedan with standard l18 with 32/36 webber and it ran dead even against a maxda 6 watever they run, so yea quick for the price spent! thats wat got me enthused, huge cherpies!
