#1 STEERING WHEEL SHUDDER
Reeves Posted on: 2004/9/2 7:19
Hi All.

I recently, about 3 mths backs renewed most of my suspension parts, ie t\rod ends, inner and outers, new b\joints, s\bar rubbers.
howver my datto's picken up a terrible shudder in front just recently.
It shudders periodically, only at low speeds.

I do know that my shocks are shot, cause they look old, black in colour and has the nissan stamp on it, my guess is that these shocks are +-30yrs old.

I would like to put on new shocks, not oil filled but gas riders.
However I dont think that this shocks could cause this type shudder.

Could it be the idler arm?, it looks like it has a play.
What and where could the problem be , that I've overlooked?
I would like to try and solve this problem myself, before having to go to any suspension specialists.

Nah, I doubt it is the shocks. I have the original 32-year old ones and they still work great. If they are bad, the car bounces up and down or otherwise 'rides rough' but doesn't cause shudder.

Shudder is usually caused by bad alignment (?)

But a vibration in the steering wheel is usually caused by wheel balance (if it's bad enough, maybe it will feel like a shudder).

My thaughts exactly DD.

Sorry, I should have used my words better to describe the shudder type..
Its not a small shudder, its more a like major earthquake at times,
its like a wheels about to come off,and the d\board rattles big time.
The wheels feels like they doing the Macarena.

Hoever they shudder goes away after I gain speed, and remember this happens periodically.

Sounds like a "seppo" tyre, where the tyre develops a bubble through the steel belts...kind of like a hernia in a human.
Just get new tyres with a free balance and alignment and all will be good.

Nope, pro-240c.
I havnt had the w\bearings replaced.
I dont think that could be the problem, cause, theres no hum or shudders at high speeds.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isnt it a sign of w\bearing wear, especially if there's a humming \winding sound whilst in movement.Where are all the Dattomatsers on this one?

Yo dude,converted
This did cross my mind, about the tyre been ####ed, but again, I dont think so.
Woudnt I be noticing the shudder all the time.
Like I stated earlier, this shidder occurs periodically{now and then}

Hi Reeves.
If you think back a bit.
Did it do this before you replaced the suspention rubbers?
If not, I would suggest to take one of the front wheels off and inspect everything up front.
It is possible that one of the rubbers are not correctly fitted or got damaged or anything like that. Inspect everything on your suspention. Even the tyres that some mentioned.
None of the suspention parts must be loose so that you can move it by hand. I know all mine is tight and mine was also replaced.
Somewhere something is loose or incorrect.
Goodluck.

Yes, check the tires. Just run your hand along the surface to feel for bulges. I had this happen last year, and indeed it did odd things like shake at slow speeds, but get smoother at high speeds.
