I have just located a brand new reground cam for an A12 and was wondering if I could use it. It is a F29 from Kelford and has
Cam Lift: Inlet - 289" Exhaust - 299".
Deg Duration: Inlet - 248 Exhaust - 294
It apparently runs from 4000 to 9000 revs. Would I need new followers etc.? What cams are others using in their A series engines??

Yeah, you will need to have your followers refaced. This costs about $40 at Mace motor reconditioners. (formerly Smiths regrinds) A cam for that rev range wont be too happy in five oclock traffic. Go talk to Vern at Maces and ask him about what grind would best suit your needs. It may seem like a good idea to get a real big grind, but you will regret it when stuck in slowmoving traffic. Plus, the cam spec card that Vern gives you has the lift at TDC, which makes dailing it in a real breeze. What motor are you running? Be aware that a cam from an early A12 will not fit a motor from 120Y onwards. (It's not a good look when the dizzy wont go in)

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, I agree that this cam would not suit my applicatoin with the rev range. I'm running an early A12 with extractors and a Weber 32/36. So would it be worth getting a cam regrind for a bit of extra performance while maintaining reasonable drivability?

Go a cam for sure. You can't really gain power without changing the cam and since you have already got a better carby and exrtractors it will make even more of a difference. It will really open it up. Go something like a 23/60 for low down power all the way up to 6000rpm. Or go a little bigger. I've got a 25/65 and it comes on strong from 4000rpm all the way to 6500rpm. These types of cams put on alot of noticalble power and midrange torque maintaining drivability and give you a decent idle note.

Frodaddy take my advice, don't go for the "biggest" cam regrind you can go, along time ago i had a cam that was a monster in my first rallycar, it was huge! the rev range was between 5000 to 8500, great for speedway but absolutely ****ing useless for anything else. Go and talk to some cam regrinders and explain what you have done to your motor, what bore size, choke size in your carby/s, what you use the vehicle for, it will save you alot of time and money. Choosing the right cam for your motor is one of the most important choices in building a strong motor, I'm sure other people will agree.

While i have a pretty good idea where i am going with my engine, i will wait untill it is ready to assemble before i organise my cam. The cam will be tailor spec'd to my engines specifications, and to my intended use. The cam will be designed for my engine, not vice versa. Tighe cams Have a look at this site & click on the handy hints button. It is a helpfull guide to cam profile selection. Wade cams also have a helpfull website, so have a bit of a cruise around in here as well.

Im using a kelford F54 Cam. specs: Cam lift: Inlet - 336" Exhaust - 336"
Duration: Inlet - 242 Exhaust - 242 The rev range is 5500-8500, could go as high as 9500rpm if the head was done well. This cam is ok in town traffic, a bit boggy down low but worth it!

I was looking at the Wade website and I think I need something like the first three grinds. I don't know which though???
1/ 23/63 Lift: Inlet: 285 Exhaust: 285 Smooth idle. good torque 2000 - 5000
2/ 28/66 Lift: Inlet: 282 Exhaust: 281 Smooth idle, good torque mild porting, extractors
3/ 30/65 Lift: Inlet: 262 Exhaust: 262 Good idle, needs exhaust, low to midrange
The rest require twin carbs or double valve springs. Any opinions? I want the lumpiest cam I can get while maintaining a decent idle but was wondering which one?
