Rear wheel bearing

Hi All,

After a few hours on the skid pan at Mt Cotton in my ute, a few weekends ago, I think I may have done a rear wheel bearing.

I now have a rotational/speed oriented noise coming from the back end. It is intermittent, sort of like a grinding noise that gets faster as speed increases.

I am going to change the diff oil to see if that helps (it needs it anyway).

Are the bearings easy to change? As easy as a front bearing? Has anyone done one before? Hints, tips.

Thanks

I once went sideways around a corner in the wet and slammed into a gutter... I had to replace both the front and the back wheelbearings. Im not sure how hard it is to do yourself, but both including labor ended up costing me $90.00

The 1200's rear wheel bearings are ball bearings, so they tend to wear out (unlike the far stronger roller bearing used on the front).

Often they will quiet up by just packing them with new grease. It's part of the normal maintainence schedule anyways (see Tune-Up Information)

To replace them you need a long press I think.

Packing them can also stop small grease leaks from the diff oil getting into the drum area (though installing the competition baffles is the ultimate solution for that ... )

Astro,

There was a lot of sideways action so I probably put it under added stress. There was a little lip on one of the corners that I did hit the wrong way so it probably explains it.

DD,

I might try and re-pack it and see how it goes, I don't have a press. It won't hurt.

Thanks for the replies.
