Minimum ring Gap?

Hey guys,
I am just about to re-assemble my engine (FJ) and notice that in the workshop manual it states a maxiumum tolerance of 1.0mm gap. The gap i have is 0.4mm, so obviously is well under the factory spec. Is there a minimum gap though? It certainly doesn't give much room for expansion when things get hot - or is this not an issue? Cheers, Mark.
