They are an interference-fit on the splines. There's just the one large nut.

You need a steering-wheel puller, which is a small gear-puller kind of thing. You can get one at an auto parts store.

Sometimes you can get it off without a puller. Don't pull on the wheel rim cause it could get damaged. But if you pound with both your fists at the same time, from behind, near the hub, it might pop off.

just make sure you put a cushion or pillow in front of u or the steering wheel when you are pulling it manually by hand.

or get a steering wheel puller cost onyl around $6 at super cheap auto or you can make one urself.

good luck

bah, buy a tool?, no way

get in there, loosen the centre nut, but dont take it right off as it will stop you from knocking yourself unconscious with the wheel when it comes off

and then pull that barstard like you've never pulled before, and hit it too if you think it will help, but i've always been able to do then by hand

just make sure that nuts there to stop it flying out at you, i've heard stories of guys knocking themselves out doing this

ask unfamilia.... he gave himself a blood nose when i was at his one day (sorry mate had to say it)

Never hit the steering wheel, only four 2mm plastic pins hold the steering column together. And the interference fit of the top and the bottom halves of the steering column.

I am yet to find an old 1200 steering column that hasn't been partially/totally broken due to dodgy rough tactics like this.

Go buy or make up a steering wheel puller. Otherwise soak the thread in WD40, wait a few hours, and tap it lightly, with the risk that you might need to go find another steering column, and/or steering box.

NEVER BASH A COLLAPSIBLE STEERING COLUMN!!!!

ps. I used to think this advice was all BS, but after pulling more than a dozen 1200 steering columns apart, I would no longer recommend rough tactics.

Once the plastic pins are broken, there is no way you can fix them properly.

I agree with the passive advice. Spray with WD40 and leave to soak. Leave the nut just on and I found the easiest way was to put my knees up behind the hub and push with those while pulling the wheel with my hands (but on the centre spoke and not on the actual wheel). Once the right angle is found the wheel should just pop off. And I tried this without the knees and thought that the knees helped get the angle right. Good Luck

dattodude, what are the symptoms of the broken pins? Does it make the wheel loose, as if the bearing is bad?
