I cannot substantiate the claim that mild steel systems sound better than stainless.
Sound, noise and music are all very subjective when it comes to quality. But an old exhaust bloke, and my dad both swear that Mild steel systems sound better. With the stainless systems sounding "tinny", possibly due to the different hardness in the different materials? This might be based on a time period when stainless systems weren't as common, and the quality had more variance. You are right about the "longevity" being an issue with mild steel systems used in a "city" environment. When an engine is cold, a lot of water condenses in the exhaust system. If the engine and exhaust system isn't run for long enough (eg. long drive), the water stays in the lowest point of the system, settling in the muffler. My advice is that almost all cheap mufflers sound bad. Stick to trusted "REAL brand name" mufflers. Not sure about HKS etc.. they aren't muffler specialists. Chris

why dont you just dump it after the cabin and then run a dummy exhaust the rest of the way, seen it done heaps. or you can run a bypass valve that can adjusted to open at a certain vacuum/pressure ??

you wont get fined for not running a cat on a ute, but an engineer wont clear it if it has been modified.
Just find a pre 1978 (???) ute and have no pollution gear at all. That doesnt comp;y with ADR 27A
