#1 Idea vs reality - Injected A14
datpoweredLJ80 Posted on: 2005/1/10 21:24
Hey there all,

I've been reading some of the threads on here on the A14 motor. So far i've found them to be more than helpfull, so thanks for that.

Basically, i'll give you a quick insite as to what i'm doing.

I'm restoring, from scratch, an LJ80 Suzuki 4x4. I payed $500 for the complete car, but the people that owned it before me advised that the engine was cooked. The motor is a A14, i've since had it all machined etc and put it back together. It wasn't cooked at all, the person that did the head up before I got to it didnt' machine it straight, but since then everything has been rectified.

I was originally going to run twin SU's on it, but i'm now toying with the idea of an SC12 charger. I've read your information about injecting the A14, but unfortunately every wrecker I've called so far have never heard of the injected version of the A14, and hence dont' have any of the parts. I've decided to continue anyway and just build the injection from scratch as well.

Here is the list of what i'm planning so far, that i'd really apreciate you guys to have a look at and make any changes you think would benifit me more.

A14 Motor
GX oval port head(shaved to true up)
Mild cam (not sure of grind)
Standard bottom end, desk shaved 10thou

Injection
Custom intake manifold(much like the one shown on here that goes back across the top of the motor
CA18 injectors
CA18 Thottle Body(including TBS)
E15 Dizzy or standard A14(not sure yet)
Microtech LT4 fuel only ECU

After i've got the motor running with the injection, then add the SC12 into the equation.

Also, i'd like add that the LJ80 standard had a 800cc 42hp motor, and weighs only about 750kg.

Any suggestion would be greatly apreciated, also if anyone has anything that i'm chasing for sale, please, let me know

is it a hardcore engine? like, for making some serious power?

the SC12 is off the 1.6L 4AGE - now while looking similar in size, the SC12 flows 1.2L of air per revolution, and the SC14 (off the 2.0L 1GGTE) flows 1.4L of air per revolution. if it's a serious power making engine then i would "trade up" to an SC14. however, the SC12 is just as good for a tuff street/drag engine - i plan on using an SC12 in a hard revving A12 build up soon (dunno what i'll put it in, though...!).

the microtechs aren't too great in fuel only guise. maybe pick up a wrecked camira for $150 and pick the delco off it instead. the delco has more mapping ability than a MoTeC.

other than that, your combo sounds good.

Did you have the head pressure tested, and hardness checked? If the previous owner had it real hot, the head could well be rooted. (Beyond just a skim)

I appluad your wanting to go for fuel injection, but do you really need it?
A drawthrough set up with a blower works quite jolly well.
You may need to measure your compression ratio, and lower it if it is too high.

Hey again ppls,

Thanks for the imput, muchly apreciated, however i think theres been a little bit of a misunderstanding. The vehical is going to be used for serious off road use, and the reason behind not wanting carbies, is I do not want the engine being starved of fuel when the car is at near tipping over angles. Also, I was aware of where the SC12 came from, and what its capable of doing.

In answer to the other questions, the head has been completely recond. Hardend seats, new springs, new valves etc. The ports have been cleaned up as well.

The Microtech was recommended to be by MazFix, who might I add now own the fastest Rotaaaaar in the world ;), so if it daint work, i'll blame them haha

I have had two LJ80s, they are fantastic vehicles and extremly capable off road, they will go where nothing else will, and between trees where the big boys are just to big to get through.
I would have thought a stock A14 with extractors and twin SUs would have more than enough grunt to get the little Suzuki wherever you wanted to go.
I never found a problem with fuel starvation going up or down steep inclines.

why waste ur time going to the trouble putting injection on a a14, why not just get a suzuki swift or cultus engine, they are 4wd injected turbo !!!

sorry guys, the suggestions that are comming out now are really out of the question.

Kegs i don't intend on putting my shopping list down the front guard of the lj either, so no, i'll stick with the A14 thanks

Thats all for now, i'll post pics when its finished.

i think swapping in a G13B where there is now an A series would be more work than injecting an A series....!

If you are going to use a supercharger, use the s/c 14. It will make less heat. Less heat=denser charge. Denser charge=more power. More power=
