Hey all,

Got a bit of a dilemma. I need to get my 1000 coupe plates changed over from Vic to SA plates, but it's in bits.

I can put it back together easily, but the previous owner had started work in the engine bay and cut out the battery tray.

Does anyone know if it's legal in SA (or anywhere for that matter) to have the battery remotely mounted in the boot? I don't want to weld another tray in - that would be a pain in the a$$!

Yes it is legal if mod plated. It must be enclosed in a box and have a vent to the outside world or be one of those totaly sealed units like a gel cell or something that doesn't release gasses.

Ok, When you say vent to the outside world,
does this mean the box (available anywhere) mist be sealed to the boot compartment and have a 'breather' venting outside the car?

I don't reckon I want to fork out for a SLA (Sealed lead acid) of automotive quality for this application...

Makes sense but I've never seen anything like it - probably because most people are too lazy to do it properly I guess...

Does anyone ahve photos of such a set-up?

Since KB10's don't actually have a "boot" as such, i wonder where you would put it. I looked at this possibility with my coupe, but there really was nowhere to put it, not even in the spare wheel well.
Placing it in the back also leaves it in view & thats not a pretty sight in a lovely car like a KB10, so mine remains in the original position.

I just measured and this would fit under the 'boot' hinge on either side all the way back:

Yeah I was reading about it the other day and it says it must be enclosed and must vent from this to outside the car. Many people put a hole in the wheel arch and stick the vent pipe through that.

I agree with everything you say there, Dodgeman - I was wondering where to put it too.

Looks like I'm going to have to weld a new tray in.
Plus, I don't like my chances of getting an original out of another car intact, so I'll have to fabricate it .

The previous owner did nothing to the car except chop the tray out - I wish he hadn't touched it!!!

I would buy a small gel cell and stick it up under the dash.

one of my defects a while ago was that my battery was in the tray of my ute, i took it to a blueslip place and the dude said all it has to be is securely bolted to the floor. mine is in a plastic vented box, with a dirty big isolator switch hanging out.

The Odyssey Battery, although small, is damn heavy. You'd need some meaty mounts, and firewall reinforcement.
