#11 Re: "Battery in boot" legal?

I've had my battery in the 'boot' in my 1200 coupe since it was first built as a road car. The 1200 has no rear bulkhead either, so they are all passenger compartment inside with no actual boot. It was engineered no problems.

I used a normal marine battery box vented with a hose through a grommet in the floor.

Make sure you have a sturdy base to mount the battery clamps off. The base should be bolted through the floor in each corner of the box with plates underneath the floor. You really don't want a lead acid battery coming unstuck in the passenger compartment if you have a crash.

You also want to ensure the + cable is very well protected and run where it will not get worn - ie not under the rear seat! It should go through the floor and be run under the car in a protected location (near fuel or brake lines) inside conduit.

I fitted mine right behind the rear seat (when it was a road car), directly over the centre of the rear axle. Not a bad place to move all that weight to, and was hardly noticeable in the road car - a black box mounted behind a black seat, surrounded by black carpet and black trim panels...

But if you got one of those small but expensive Odyssey batteries, you may be able to mount it under the passenger seat? Do 1000's have that false floor in the boot area? I know my 100 coupe didn't but that doesn't mean it shouldn't have! If so you could mount it under there too.

1000 coupes do have the false floor (all three of mine have in the past), but I'd rather see the spare wheel in there...
That leaves little room for anything else.

I tried to call the Vehicle Modifications hotline for Transport SA today - but it rang out every time - must have been on their 15 minute per hour break...

Oh well, maybe tomorrow...

Oh, yeah - Kegs - In the tray of the ute is a different story 'cause it's alreay outside the cabin. In my coupe there is no firewall between the boot and the rest of the passenger compartment...
