As a certifier I would like to know who in NZ will certify a car with a hydraulic handbrake. They are illegal for road use. You may apply for dispensation though the NZ Motorsport Association but unless the car is used in competition regularly you'll be out of luck. The reasoning right or wrong is that in an emergency ala loss of hydraulic pressure the mechanical handbrake can be used to stop the car. I have argued unsuccessfully for years saying that a separate hydraulic circuit for the handbrake should be OK but to no avail. I built a Datto coupe a few years back for a friend that had a hydraulic set up that used the stock handbrake and cables actuating a master cylinder hidden in a box in the floor behind the drivers seat. He ran it for nearly three years before it was spotted and I got a rap over the knuckles for doing it!!!

stirlingmac it would be fully legal in a rally/race car with a current Motorsport Authority card but in a street car it would be ILLEGAL right .

I believe they are illegal here in the states too. Just thought I'd chime in.
