I am 18 and on my green p's, so i am under the impression that this proposed law will not effect me if they do go ahead with it. anyway, i feel that this law is not the solution. i have attended driver training courses at the driver training institute at willowbank which improved my driving skills (with a big emphasis on braking) and i recommend them. i think that defensive driver training should be a compulsory course for anyone applying for a licence, similar to motorbike licencing in NSW.

basically i think that they should ban low performance drivers, not high performance cars.

Yeh but thats assuming no high performing young driver has an ego the size of the universe, or big enough that his high driving skill will push him into doing something stupid through over confidence. That just simply isnt true. And driver training thus might have a drawback. Dont ever overlook Testosterone and its effects on the young male (ie biggest offender).

Anyone under 25 should be stopped from driving any turbo, v6, v8, v10, v12 or anything with even a hint of power. Just look at the statistics and you will see proof enough. If you limit the capacity of people within a high risk category from driving you can only reduce fatalities/injuries. Just stick them in excels and tell them to shutup and cope. If they winge about space give them the 4 door version.

The crap they have now isnt the solution. But its at least a start.

I do agree with the ban of high performance cars but that in its self is not the solution.

This ban needs to be looked at in detail.

Just a thought when you get of the ban you will be able for the first time to go have a couple of beers at the pub walk out still under the limit and go get straight into a v8 or a turbo with out any experience driving these cars.

I think it was about 1989 or 90 when vic introduced power restrictions on p platers. I was to young to remember what differance it made to the road tole. But the stupid thing was you couldnt drive a 308 in a in a kingswood but you could drive a V6 in a commodore VN. My point is the 308 in the kingswood was a lot torquier than the commodore. But the comodore up to 120kmh woud #### all over the V8. Its the same with bikes L platers can ride apprilia 250 2 strokes one of the fastest 250 road bikes in the world but cant jump on an old mid 80s 400 wich wouldn pull a greasy stick out of a ducks arse I think some one needs to stop number crunching & actulay drive or ride these things

Put yourself in the Government's shoes. Do you want them to number crunch every facet or the car/bike, and tell you exactly which models that you can and can't drive. A 90% fix that requires no administration is a good solution. BTW, wasn't the 2 stroke loophole was patched in NSW in the early 90s?

I still think that driver education is the best way. Lose it sideways at 120kmh on a racetrack, and your freshly stained underpants will remind you of your car's limits.

I think Charles Darwin got it right. If you drive like a crazy man, you'll be asked to leave the gene pool.

Being in Tassie this doesn't affect me but if i was the same age in NSW then it would but i would DEFINATLEY have exactly the same view, maybe even more...

Here we dont have really really rich kids like in NSW Vic and so on so i get the perspective down here that mummy and daddy will by them a BWM or R34 some other hiPiO car, tell me if im wrong...
But most of the people i know have to buy there own cars (and i do go to a private school) and off the top of my head the most expensive car that my mate has was $9800 and that was a subaru liberty the cheapest is ME with my old B210 which was $250!! BUT the other stupid thing is that we have a HUGE rural society at my school as most are farmers kids thus making them have WB's, HZ's, HX's and so on whic have 202's 253's or 308's which are all classed in 6 or 8 cylinder cars....These utes i reckon are fukn dangerous as these guyys have no bloody skill whatso ever with a ute as the ass end is realllllly heavy....

I have a few friends with turbo/supercharged cars, one whose building a SS Torana s/c 186 with haltech injection & other bits (although he's a car buff so i trust him, kinda..), but once again - they think there all king sh|t try and drive at 1 million miles an hour all the time but is there choicece NOT mine.

Now im 18 in 1 month and as most people thought of at this time is 'yes 1 month and i can go to the pub!' but im not about to drive faster, i will maintain the speed limit or whatever im meant to be driving at so in someways i dont think its all got to do with age moreso the brain and the will power of people... If you've got 3 16 - 18 yr olds in the back seat saying ' oh come on dave rag em up' or 'dont be a pussy go faster' ill just tell em to get the hell out of my car and walk......It all comes down to does the driver have enough guts to say no and just keep on driving or listen to them and die?!

Ive been in car crashes with friends and they have all been the drivers fault as they were the one at the time with the less will power rather than the passengers, luckily the worst injury to come out of it is a mild concussion and a blood nose so ive been lucky... But this isnt going to stop me thinking everytime i see ANOTHER kid dead from a highspeed car crash and think holy dog crap that could have been me!!!

But my 2c's worth is that, yes defensive driving courses would be the GREATEST idea in the world and letting a 16 - 17 yr old in a 200kw turbo/V8 monster is not a sane persons idea...
but not also that, but maybe if they are allowed to drive these cars put them in a registered section of their own and make them have regular check ups or something??
So when it really comes down to it, do we want p platers driving these kinds or cars, and me being one i still say hell no - they need proper guidence and instructions on how to handle these cars before being let behind the wheel of one. But it also ALWAYS comes down to the piolt and do they have the will power to say no and not give in to peer presure and drive responsibly..............
