#1 axle tramp -solutions?
funkeyman Posted on: 2005/3/5 11:23
Hi all,
my ute suffers bad with axle tramp, does anyone use some kind of tramp bars/rods?
I thought of making a set similar to the early GT fords- brackets welded to the top of the axle tubes , pivot point on either chassis rail and a spring steel bar bushed at either end, bolted between the the chassis pionts and brackets on top of axle tubes.
The problem here is the ute fuel tank is in the way.
The other options are the old style tramp bars which bolt underneath the leaf springs , you know the chrome ones with the rubber stoppers that hit the underside of the chassis to stop tramp.- again the problem with these is ground clearance- mainly kerbs and shopping centre speed humps.
Anyone have any other suggestions?

my Kb10 had severe axle tramp, if you booted it it was undriveable, it now has a thick extra leaf on top of the other springs that only goes from the axle forward and stops the tramp really well.

My ute's got the second leaf reversed on top of the pack. (previous owner) No axle tramp problems, plus it lowers it. Stiff as hell and from memory not legal in Australia but it's fine here.

Saw another idea with a bracket welded to the top of the diff housing and a bracket welded under one of the ute tray supports with a bushed bar between- had started to twist the tray support- not a good idea!

Not a bad idea

with a worked A series like you have, there is absolutely no need for additional links. Its overkill, and besides it's just treating the symptom rather than the problem. If your shocks are in good condition and your springs are done properly, you will not have axle tramp problems.

I assume you have lowered the ute? how?

I presume that its a standard ute,A12?

Personally, i've never had a problem with wheel tramp in my 1200 ute, it chews 13' 65-205 tyres quite easliy!!!!!
My coupe does!!!! badly!!!!!!!(Only because its CA18DET POWERED!!!!!)

I agree with L18_B110, check your springs and shocks, you might find that it needs new shocks, on a ute that is easy, 2 bolts on each side, done in 15 minutes!
try that first.
depends on if you lowered it and how you did it.

Is that a 'CALTRAK' set up in the photo??
looks like it.

Ok, Its a '72 lowered ute ( blocks welded under the diff/spring mounts) with a worked A14 running 195/60R14's. The current diff is cactis and I'm currently working on a replacement. The springs are a little warn , might sorce some replacements first, thanks guys.
