Just put the new cam in and trying to tune the engine, starting with the idle( dont have a timing gun atm so did the timing by trial and error). Tacho reads 1000rpm at idle, doesnt seem to go any lower without stalling, but shoud with proper timing. Once warmed up, gave it some gas and at full throtle, the tacho reads about 9000rpm but my tacho only goes up to 8000. Before installing the new cam it only reved out to 7000rpm. Not sure if the tacho is incorrect just seems really weird, whats your opinion the specs of this cam are at www.tighecams.com.au part no. 140

Although not impossible........I dont think that changing the cam alone makes the engine rev to 9000 RPM, well not for long......
On a side note, peak power tends to be around 7600 - 7800 RPM for the A-series engine, past that the power usually plateaus off.

I would verify the accuracy of you tach.

with that cam and a single carb, there is no way the engine will make power to 9000rpm. Did you just hold it on WOT in first gear until it wouldn't rev any more?

the tacho is obviously incorrect, i know my engine isnt capable of reaching 9000, id be pushing it to get 8000, its only a cheap tacho, it shat itself when i put a msd blaster 2 coil in but it worked fine with an accel supercoil

But that still doesn't answer the question.....Why would you free rev your engine like that....did you want a closer look at the internals?

Nice way to run a new cam in though

Well if u want to put it that way, i was actually advised to rev my engine to about 3000rpm for aproximatly 10 minutes once the new cam is in as the oil pressure at this rpm is enough to pump the oil back into the oil galleries as they were dryed up

and the reason y i 'free reved' my engine(since your so F**KING concerned) was to see if the tappets needed to be tightened

I dont no if youve cheaked or not but datsuns didnt come out with huyndia excel motors, the a series is a little bit stronger

9000 rpm?? So what! It's an A series and it'll do it all day long.... My A15 pulls 8400 rpm before it valve bounces...... And it will go close to that in 3rd gear..... Chill people! Have faith in the datsun.

Call me conservative, but whats the point in reving the engine until it wont rev anymore....I dont think valve bouncing the motor does much for your reliability stakes.

I love to rev the A-series engine as hard as anyone, but reving past the peak power point has little benefit as i see it. The redline point is there for a reason.
