yes and no...

no cause its illegal and dangerous due to the springs tendency to fall out of the saddle as the bottom or top is no longer flattened

yes if you want to write off a datsun...and maybe yourself your passengers and any other unsuspecting motorist or pedestrian that may be in the way.

theres a few pros and cons to doing this.
con - YES, IT IS ILLEGAL.
pro - not all springs are 'flattened' and depending on how much you're cutting off, the spring will stay trapped. it will also remain trapped as long as there is weight on it. if you are into jumping your car then you may have problems.

i've just been through all this with a suspension shop as i have proper lowered springs that are not trapped in either 1200 struts or stanza struts. as a precaution we've secured the base of the spring to the seat till we can source different springs.

i have cut springs in the past, a set of 1600 struts in a 120y, 2 coils came off and the spring remained trapped including lowering the car the desired amount.

personally, i'd consult a suspension shop, they'll more than likely push you towards buying new springs but they should also give you their professional opinion, if you ask nicely.
