many of u would have seen this but those who havnt i will explain......

instead of goin out and builing a nice expensive turbo exhaust manifold ....things can be made easier by using ...say the stock exhaust manifold....with a 180' mandrel bent pipe from the flange conection at the end of the stock manifold.... that bends round to connect up the the exhaust housing on the turbo.....

this is cheap yes....but will it and does it work ??? i cant see any reason why it wont u mite have a slight increase in lag but i mean the standard exhaust manifold isn't that long....

let me know ur thoughts

I think the biggest issue is that you will loose alot of heat before it gets to the turbo

there is an easier way, just get the stock manifold and cut the leg off the manifold where that flange is, weld it up with some thick plate and then bore a hole and put a bit of steam pipe on that, with a flange for the turbo. woodydat has a pic of a real easy one,if you ask him nicely he might post it. may be a bit crude but any way u do it without making a whole new one is going to be crude.....

The old J pipe works extremely well. It does increase lag a little due to the heat loss but I have found in the past that this is a benifit on a street car. Reduced heat before the gases reach the turbine housing means less heatsoak into the compressor housing. On a drag car with a short manifold the engine will have been switched off before the heat soak has showed any signs.

I don't think it will suck much power by using an "up-pipe" to the turbine from the stock manifold, but there are a few things to consider. The turbocharged Subaru's have been doing this for years, including the current WRX.

First thing to consider is that you've got to have a really tight seal on that pipe from the manifold so I would recommend using a manifold with at least a three bolt flange and make sure you either weld up or seal off the stock heat riser assembly if it has one.

Another issue is going to be the extra weight! Turbos on top of an already heavy exhaust manifold is going to put a lot of extra stress on the already kinda small studs that hold the manifolds on, so I recommend bracing the turbo and the manifold to the engine (NOT the body/frame) in a couple spots to help ease the load.

I was going to go this route as well if I stayed A series, it would be the easiest way to set up a turbo I think. Good luck!

u guys are great there are some great ideas there.....particularly the point made about wrxs ....the boxer engines have been using a similar set up for ages and the runners on them are long as.

i sized it up today and it looks to be easy as .....just wondering though.......with the carby on a draw through set up runnin five pounds can i just use the stock carby with very very drilled out jets or is it time to go buy a holley??
