Hi everyone. My daughter just bought her 1st car, a 1974 Datsun 1200 Auto. It's stock except for exhaust, 14" Hotwire Mags & Autotechnica Seats. It's soo slow, but fun to drive. We want to upgrade the brakes & fix the distributor (doesn't advance) & could do with some advice. She also wants to replace the seats with originals, but I thought they would be uncomfortable

Hey, how you doin. SO how is the old girl? She was my first car aswell, i sold it to mike. Hows the car goin?? I miss her, even though i bought another 1200, but with a nicer engine..a CA18DET . I hear you dont like my seats? Ive got a perfect set of seats out of a Prelude that she might like that are currently in my car. If she wants im willing to swap cause i really wanted to keep those seats when i sold it to mike. For it being slow i know what you mean, my advice for you if you want it to be a bit quicker but not spend much money...convert to manual cause as autop you have to rev it for it to get anywhere. About the brakes not sure what to do, maybe get a set of 120y disk brakes for her. Let me know what you think about the seats.
Cheers, Daniel

Gay mate i'd say leave in the racing seats put on a 32/36 weber and manual gearbox that should get her going.

Thanks for the advice. We are going to keep the auto as that is what she wanted anyway. Sorry Daniel but if the seats are changed, they will be replaced with originals. A weber sounds good but I was thinking about S.U's as I know more about them. I ran triple 2" on an EH.

I would say pull out the A12 and swap it for an A15 from an importer.

That will give it a bit more go and is pretty simple to do.

Hey vex66 - I'd just like to say 'Nice Work' on getting your daughter a real car for her first. I see too many teenagers driving around in these plastic fantastic's. It's nice to see that someone can appreciate a classic.

id say pick up an a14 or a15, would be the simpelest way to get it moving for sure, the auto box will still bolt up to these motors

there is some slight mounting issues, but they are easily overcome, and there maybe issues with rego and insurance if these are a concern

su's is a good conversion especially with a a12gx head, or a14/15 head adapted to the a12, though the toughest part to get will probably be the intake manifold

then other tricks like extractors, thermo fan, and the usuals

turbo doesnt hurt either

Before we worry about horsepower, I want to get the brakes sorted. I thought about picking up a rusty 120y for the disc brakes, sway bar & power booster. I saw a couple of cheap ones in the trading post. I really wanted to buy a EXA but now we have the Datto, I love it too. I might get a 240Z & we can go on club runs.

so..... it has the drums on the front???

you could chuck the coupe struts in for disc brakes, you also need the coupe master cylinder, shouldnt need a booster for this setup

also 120y struts will give a similar upgrade

or if getting fancy you can go for the square headlight stanza strut, still a pretty straight forward swap..... and still could do without having to install a booster
