What steering wheels are suitable as replacements? Smaller would obviously be better but would a flatter one also be an improvement? - it would get it further away so your arms are straighter but might there then be a problem with it hitting your knees?

The standard wheel is not very dished so you're not going to get much more reach out of a flat wheel. Smaller is certainly better as then you can at least get your legs under the wheel without rubbing all the time. You can comfortably go as small as 13 inches as the steering is still quite light, even with larger tyres.

Just take note that the flatter the sterring wheel is, the closer the rim gets to your indicator stalk. Bumping the idicators on every time you turn the wheel is a real PITA.

I got an Autotechnica polished "wood" one for my ute which I am very happy with.

I got it from Supercheap on special for $49 and I think the boss was around $80.

It's a lot better than the standard one.
